At Sage Life Coaching I often talk about the intelligence of the mind. Our beliefs, our language, our goals and the patterns that drive behaviour.

But there is another form of intelligence that is just as powerful, and most people have never been taught to use it.

It is called somatic intelligence.

The word somatic comes from the Greek word soma, meaning body. Somatic intelligence is simply the ability to understand, interpret and respond to the signals coming from your body.

Your body is constantly giving you information, often long before your conscious mind has caught up.

A tightening in your shoulders.
A knot in your stomach.
A deep breath of relief.
A feeling of expansion and excitement.

These are not random sensations. They are signals.

Somatic intelligence is the skill of noticing those signals, understanding what they mean and using them to guide your decisions, emotions and behaviour.

For example:

• A tight stomach before making a decision may signal anxiety or misalignment.
• A feeling of ease or expansion may signal excitement or authenticity.
• Shallow breathing often indicates stress.
• Relaxed posture and deeper breathing usually indicate safety or confidence.

People who develop strong somatic intelligence become far better at recognising what is really happening inside them.

They can often:

• Notice stress before it becomes overwhelming
• Manage emotions more effectively
• Regulate their nervous system
• Make decisions that feel aligned
• Recover more quickly from challenging experiences

In modern life we are trained to rely almost entirely on thinking. Analysing. Reasoning. Problem solving.

That is valuable.

But it is only half the equation.

Your body is an extraordinary communication system. It holds information, memory and signals that your conscious mind may not yet have processed.

Through practices such as mindfulness, breathwork, movement, and many of the NLP techniques I teach, people begin to reconnect with this internal guidance system.

And something fascinating happens.

They start making better decisions.
They recognise stress earlier.
They move through emotional experiences with far more resilience.

Because they are no longer ignoring the intelligence of their body.

One of the simplest truths I share with my clients is this:

Your body often knows things your mind has not yet worked out.

Learning to listen to those signals can dramatically improve emotional wellbeing, decision making and overall quality of life.

Your mind is powerful.

Your body is wise.

When the two work together, real transformation begins.

Day 82 – Avoiding Pain vs Moving Toward Pleasure

There are two powerful forces that drive almost every decision you make.

Moving away from pain.

And moving toward pleasure.

Your mind is constantly scanning for both. It is either trying to avoid something uncomfortable, or move you toward something that feels good. Most of the time, this happens so quickly and automatically that you do not even notice it.

But once you do, everything starts to make more sense.

Some people are primarily driven by avoiding pain. They make decisions based on what will reduce stress, prevent failure, avoid rejection, or minimise discomfort. Others are more driven by moving toward pleasure. They focus on what they want to create, achieve, experience, or enjoy.

Neither is right or wrong.

Both are part of how your mind works.

The difference is in the direction they take you.

When you are mainly avoiding pain, your focus is on what you do not want. You might avoid difficult conversations, delay big decisions, or stay in situations that feel familiar, simply because they are not as uncomfortable as the unknown.

Avoiding pain can keep you safe.

It can also keep you stuck.

On the other hand, when you are moving toward pleasure, your focus shifts to what you do want. You begin to think about outcomes, possibilities, and experiences that excite you. Your energy moves forward rather than backward.

Moving toward something creates momentum.

It gives your brain a direction to follow.

The challenge is that many people set goals based on what they want to avoid.

“I don’t want to be stressed.”

“I don’t want to be broke.”

“I don’t want to feel like this anymore.”

And while those are valid feelings, your brain struggles to act on them clearly. It hears what to move away from, but not always what to move toward.

Your brain needs a target.

Not just an escape route.

When you shift from avoiding pain to moving toward what you truly want, something changes. Your focus becomes clearer, your actions become more intentional, and your motivation becomes more natural.

You are no longer just trying to get away.

You are moving toward something meaningful.
