An Australian first surgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) has enabled a patient with suspected lung cancer to have biopsies taken, cancer confirmed and removed all in one operation, under one anaesthetic.
Using the bronchoscopy robot introduced at SCGH last year, Dr Dhaval Thakker located the cancer deep in the lungs moments before Thoracic surgeon Dr Miguel Mesa-Guzman performed minimally invasive surgery so the patient could wake up cancer free.
Congratulations to our incredible respiratory and surgical teams๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
Our state-of-the-art bronchoscopy robot equipment, the only one of its kind in WA, was made possible thanks to funding from the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund and generous donations by the McCusker Charitable Foundation, Charlies Foundation for Research and Institute For Respiratory Health.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Colin Tang, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Radiation Oncology Consultant and Investigator, who recently presented at the Accuray Australasian Symposium on a cutting-edge treatment option for early-stage primary liver cancer.

His work explores whether Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) could offer a safer, more effective treatment option for people with early-stage liver cancer.

SABR is a highly precise form of radiation therapy that delivers high doses of radiation to tumours, while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissue. An advanced robotic version of this technology is known as CyberKnife.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is home to the only public CyberKnife system in Australia, which can automatically track a tumour as it moves during treatment.

Long-serving Graylands Hospital volunteer Edna Prosser recently celebrated her 100th birthday, with a morning tea ceremony held in her honour. ๐ŸŽ‚

Edna has been volunteering with us for an amazing 48 years, for which we are extremely grateful.

Edna's volunteering journey began in the 1970s, when she began helping with the local sewing group. Over the years she has supported a variety of projects, including arranging fundraising, taking patients on outings, helping set up the shop inside Frankland, developing the volunteer centre and establishing the Volunteer's Op Shop. She was also the President of Graylands Hospital Volunteers Service Inc for more than 35 years and is still a committee member.

She continues to volunteer every Wednesday, and is truly an inspiration to the team.

Wishing Edna a very happy birthday, as she joins the exclusive centenarian's club ๐Ÿฅณ
