Our nursing teams at Sir Charles Gairdner and Osborne Park Hospitals had a blast celebrating all things nursing at our annual Nursing Extravaganza this month.

The events featured creative, interactive, and fun stalls to showcase the amazing work of our nurses

The displays were based around our Nursing Philosophy theme, 'Caring is our business', and demonstrated how team's align with one of the four pillars: people, patients, profession and partnership.

Well done to all staff involved, the creativity on show was truly amazing ๐Ÿ‘

Today on Remembrance Day we remember the bravery and sacrifice of the people who lost their lives while serving Australia and its allies in wars, conflicts and peace operations.

Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War when the guns fell silent on the Western Front at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.

This tradition continues today as we thank and recognise all those who have served, and continue to serve, to protect our people and our country.

Lest we forget.

With a range of nursing opportunities currently available at Sir Charles Gardiner (SCGH) and Osborne Park Hospitals, Abbie shares what she loves about working as a newly-qualified nurse for our organisation.

After completing her final student placement at SCGH, Abbie was offered a position on the same ward as a newly qualified registered nurse at the beginning of 2024.

Abbie says the continuous support from the team has been essential in her career progression.

Working at SCGH has not only provided her with diverse professional opportunities but also the chance to build lasting friendships.

Feedback from consumers and carers about the power of peer support in recovery from stroke has inspired an important piece of research looking into the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (AI) platform to provide peer support for stroke survivors.

One of the carers involved in the co-design of the project, Nichola Browning, said peer support makes such a positive difference to someone recovering from a stroke, their carers, and families.

Nichola became a carer following her daughterโ€™s stroke six years ago and is passionate about supporting other stroke survivors.

Osborne Park Hospital Occupational Therapy Coordinator Toni Heinemann is leading the research project, in partnership with stroke survivor Stacie Broek with support by the World Stroke Organisation and Curtin University.

The project allows users to interact via artificial intelligence with Stacie, who provides first-hand perspectives on stroke recovery.

A world-first initiative developed at KEMH has led to a significant reduction in preterm and early birth rates, improving the outcomes for thousands of women and their babies across the country.
The dedication and hard work of clinical staff harnessing new knowledge to prevent preterm birth and shape new research has led to around 4000 fewer early births in Australia since the program began in WA in 2018.
Preterm birth which is defined as birth after 20 weeks and before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy, remains a leading cause of death and long-term disability in children worldwide. Congratulations to Professor John Newnham and the Preterm Birth Prevention Clinic team at King Edward Memorial for all their incredible work and results.
