ARE SIT UPS A GOOD THING FOR YOUR BACK?
Developing strong "core" muscles is a good thing to support your back. The problem is that many of the exercises used to strengthen the core put a ton of stress on your spine and can actually cause damage.
Forward bending your spine under load significantly increases pressure in your spinal discs in a rearward direction. Importantly, the rear of the spinal disc is it's weakest part. It's no coincidence that the vast majority of disc bulges & herniations happen in that exact direction.
