🚙🩺 We love taking simulation on the road to support our rural and regional Hunter New England Local Health District colleagues.

We had a fantastic day at John Hunter Hospital delivering the Emergency Department 𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗧-𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 simulation course.

📑 Key takeaways from the day:
✅ Reinforce the use of a systematic approach to the assessment and management of any ED patient
✅Perform a rapid assessment/primary & secondary survey and initiate early management of patients presenting to the emergency
department
✅Provide an opportunity for you to practice teamwork skills including coordination of resources, leadership and followership, and speaking up for safety

🌟𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲

It was a pleasure working alongside Emergency Department and ICU clinicians from Calvary Mater during yesterday’s crisis team training course.

The day centred on simulation-based scenarios, with a focus on communication, leadership, and coordinated team responses in high-acuity situations.

This week, we held an action-packed ICU Difficult Airway Management Course, bringing together an amazing group of Clinicians. The teamwork, comradery, and commitment to learning were inspiring!

💡 Why does this course stand out?
We focused on incorporating cognitive aids like the Vortex Approach to help clinicians:
✅ 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲
✅ 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴

Serious complications such as bleeding or cardiac arrest following open-heart surgery may require emergency chest reopening in ICU. While rare, these high-risk situations demand a rapid, coordinated and confident response.

As Simulation Program Manager at the HNE Simulation Centre, Liz is all about creating practical, engaging learning experiences that support healthcare teams to build skills, confidence and capability.

With a background in ICU nursing and quality management, she brings a strong clinical lens to everything she does—along with a passion for making simulation more accessible, innovative and inclusive, especially for teams working across diverse and regional settings.

She’s passionate about supporting and empowering her team, creating opportunities for them to grow, collaborate and thrive, and coordinates professional development days built around their needs to ensure learning is relevant, practical and impactful.
