Safer health care through training and research excellence in the field of simulation.

The HNE Simulation Centre is an interprofessional, multi-disciplinary, educational facility within Hunter New England Local Health District. We deliver simulation-based training that addresses clinical and non-clinical challenges, to more than 4000 participants each year. The centre is supported by a team of specialist doctors and senior nurses who are certified simulation instructors and clinically active in the specialty areas of anaesthesia, intensive care (adult, paediatric and neonatal) and emergency medicine. Research:
Our multidisciplinary faculty have a track record in innovation and research. We conduct human factors research that aims to improve patient safety by developing new tools and guidelines to use in clinical practice, particularly in emergency situations, and testing new processes and equipment prior to their implementation into clinical practice. We use in situ simulation as a research and quality improvement tool to analyse equipment and environments at the design and pre-commissioning stages, and to identify latent safety threats in existing spaces. We are interested in resilient health care and understanding how expertise contributes to the capacity of a system to respond to challenges. We also conduct research into why and how simulation works as a teaching tool and are particularly interested in understanding which elements of a clinical encounter should be retained in a simulated encounter. Support for Simulation:
The centre also provides support for simulation-based training including instructor and faculty development, curriculum development and evaluation, and advice regarding the establishment and running of simulation centres.

🌟 Dedicated clinicians from 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 spent the day at the HNE Simulation Centre, participating in the tailored 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 course.

The course featured carefully designed, highly realistic simulation scenarios, providing clinicians with the opportunity to practise critical skills in a safe, supportive environment—without risk to patients.

Today we said farewell to Liz Espert, our Midwifery Simulation Coordinator extraordinaire. Liz has been an essential member of our team—supporting onsite and offsite rural and regional courses and helping shape the quality and consistency of our obstetric activities. Liz now turns her focus to her role within Maternity Services at John Hunter Hospital. We will miss her dearly and wish her all the very best for her future career endeavours.

We also delivered a fantastic 𝗢𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 course today.

We’re excited to welcome 💐 𝗠𝗲𝗹 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗻 to the HNE Simulation Centre team as our newest Simulation Coordinator (Casual).

Mel is a Registered Nurse and Midwife, and continues to work as a Midwife at John Hunter Hospital. She brings a strong passion for education and loves teaching clinicians at all stages of their careers.
