HNE Simulation Centre

Safer health care through training and research excellence in the field of simulation.

The HNE Simulation Centre is an interprofessional, multi-disciplinary, educational facility within Hunter New England Local Health District. We deliver simulation-based training that addresses clinical and non-clinical challenges, to more than 4000 participants each year. The centre is supported by a team of specialist doctors and senior nurses who are certified simulation instructors and clinically active in the specialty areas of anaesthesia, intensive care (adult, paediatric and neonatal) and emergency medicine. Research:
Our multidisciplinary faculty have a track record in innovation and research. We conduct human factors research that aims to improve patient safety by developing new tools and guidelines to use in clinical practice, particularly in emergency situations, and testing new processes and equipment prior to their implementation into clinical practice. We use in situ simulation as a research and quality improvement tool to analyse equipment and environments at the design and pre-commissioning stages, and to identify latent safety threats in existing spaces. We are interested in resilient health care and understanding how expertise contributes to the capacity of a system to respond to challenges. We also conduct research into why and how simulation works as a teaching tool and are particularly interested in understanding which elements of a clinical encounter should be retained in a simulated encounter. Support for Simulation:
The centre also provides support for simulation-based training including instructor and faculty development, curriculum development and evaluation, and advice regarding the establishment and running of simulation centres.

A busy day in the centre today with two high-value training programs designed to strengthen clinical confidence, enhance patient safety, and support the development of our future anaesthesia workforce.

🩺𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝗽𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲
This course provides junior doctors with an interest in anaesthesia, or who are about to commence in a registrar role, the knowledge and skills to safely administer labour epidurals for analgesia.

🗣 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗥𝗠𝗢 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴

Last week, clinicians from Maitland and surrounding areas came together for a hands-on rural trauma team training day! From realistic scenarios to equipment tailored to what’s available locally, the focus was on early recognition and stabilisation of adult trauma patients.

Our team had a fantastic day at John Hunter Hospital delivering the 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗧-𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 for local clinicians.

📑𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆:
✅ Applying a systematic approach to assessing and managing emergency patients
✅ Conducting a rapid primary & secondary survey and initiating early management
✅ Strengthening teamwork and communication — including leadership, followership, and speaking up for safety

🌟 Dedicated clinicians from 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 were in the HNE Simulation Centre today taking part in the tailored 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 course.

The course featured meticulously planned, realistic simulated scenarios, giving clinicians the opportunity to practice critical skills with no risk to patients.

Thank you to 𝗘𝗿𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗻, 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 at Belmont Hospital 👍 for her leadership in coordinating participants. We look forward to delivering future courses for Belmont Hospital clinicians!
