Our friends at Freedom Health & Wellness have added new class times for their Staying Active Lite class.

If you're looking for a low-impact way to exercise, this class might be the perfect thing. Work on your strength and flexibility in a supervised and friendly community atmosphere.

The best part is that if you are a Corumbene Community Services client, your Support at Home package could potentially cover the cost of this class.

πŸͺ’🧺 Corumbene Visits Bunnings πŸͺ’🧺

Every month a group of Corumbene residents and staff head out to Bunnings Warehouse Australia as part of the Garden Club. Earlier this month, the group spent the morning in a workshop learning how to weave their own rattan plant holders. The residents were very enthusiastic about this activity and impressed with their achievements.

The DIY Staff always make sure to put a smile on the residents' faces each time they visit. We are so grateful to this community program and the Bunnings staff, especially Coralea the host who will be leaving Bunnings soon, and Mel who helps out during the workshop.

We wish Coralea the best on her new adventure and can't wait to spend more time with Bunnings in the future.

πŸŽ¨πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ¨ Looking for a Fun Afternoon Activity? πŸŽ¨πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ¨

If you're looking to do something different with your weekend, head over to the New Norfolk RSL tomorrow on Sunday, 23 November for an afternoon of Arts & Crafts.

This event is a great experience for the whole family from young children looking for excitement to grandparents wanting to build connections. Starting at 1:30pm at the RSL, everyone will be spending the afternoon together learning and making crafts from painting canvases to decorating cards and ornaments ahead of the holiday season.

If you want to join this event, adults will be paying $30 per person and $10 per child. This cost covers all the materials you'll be using so you won't have to bring anything else but yourself.

Happy crafting!

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ–₯πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Using Virtual Reality to Learn about Deescalation for Dementia πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ–₯πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ

Earlier this week, we had the privilege of welcoming Dementia Australia to come and teach some of our Corumbene Community Services team ways to deescalate behaviour involving a person living with dementia through simulated, immersive experiences thanks to virtual reality (VR) headsets.

Carolyn from Dementia Australia started the morning off by explaining what would happen throughout the session and how to use the VR headsets correctly for the simulation. The group was shown a few different scenes where they were able to make choices which resulted in each person seeing a different outcome, some negative and some positive. After each scene, the group debriefed how the situation could have gone different and different strategies that would be more helpful for the person living with dementia. Carlie, a Clinical Case Manager, even remarked that the use of VR headsets was good way to learn through experience.

In the session, Carolyn explained to the group that not all strategies work all the time, but that the majority will help a majority of the time. One of the best ways she recommended deescalating a situation with a person living with dementia is acknowledging what they are saying or feeling in a gentle or respectful manner instead of distracting them. Work with the reality they are in rather than against it because it could make things worse.

🍝🍜 Nothing Like Sharing a Family Meal 🍝🍜

Last month, Corumbene participated in COTA (Council On The Ageing) Tasmania Seniors Week. The week was full of fun festivities involving different generations connecting over food. One of the last events of the week was Family Meal.

During the Friday lunch, residents were welcome to invite their family members to join them for a special meal and some quality time together. Everyone had a wonderful time and couldn't stop smiling as they enjoyed their delicious meals prepared by the joyful Elizer and Karen.

What is your favourite meal to share with family?

β™»πŸ—‘ Help Corumbene by Donating Your Recyclables β™»πŸ—‘

For the past few months, Corumbene has been working with Recycle Rewards to raise funds for purchasing VR headsets so our residents can travel the world from the comfort of their homes. People are able to give their refunds to Corumbene through the Recycle Rewards app when they return their recyclable goods at a deposit station.

To make it even easier for you to help us reach our goal, we have placed collection bins throughout the Residential facility and offices of Corumbene. Whether you just finished a can of Coca-Cola or have had the last drop of your water bottle, instead of tossing it in any old recycle bin, try to place it in one of our collection bins and we can use that $0.10 to help fund our campaign.

If you are at the Residential facility, you'll find the blue and pink collection bins near the Linkway Cafe, in the Main Dining Room, and by Reception. You can also find them in our Staff Room, Admin House, Community House and around the Health Hub offices.

If you'd like to donate your refund to Corumbene, be sure to check out our video on our page showing you how you can allocate your refund to our campaign.

πŸ“£πŸ’Ό New Employment Opportunities Coming to Corumbene πŸ“£πŸ’Ό

Corumbene Community Services is teaming up with Workforce Australia to release a new role for people who want to do entry level work but have yet to obtain their Certificate III in Community Services.

Earlier this week, our HR & Community teams hosted an information session for those interested in the role. During the meeting, our team discussed what the role would look like, what Corumbene can offer the people in this role and who is best suited for this position.

Our Director of Community Services, Kirsty Bartlett Clark, along with our Community Services Manager, Jess Hodge, and Community Services Team Leader, Maddi each spoke about their roles and what makes Corumbene Community Services a great place to work.

At the end, our HR team spoke about next steps including launching the role online in early December, the interview process and other future employment opportunities.

If this role sounds like something you'd be interested in, please email us at careers@corumbene.org.au to learn more in early December.

πŸ’«πŸ’ž Caring Quilters Donate to Corumbene πŸ’«πŸ’ž

At Corumbene, we are lucky enough to be supported by our generous community, especially those that are talented with crafts.

Recently, the group known as the Caring Quilters gifted Corumbene’s residents 5 handmade quilts. There was a lot of emotion as one of the residents remarked that the flowers reminded them of their grandma. Another resident thought they had won the quilt while one gentleman wanted to gift his quilt to his darling wife.

Marguerite Ross and her friends, Val, Lorraine, Stella and Marian, are known as the Caring Quilters who spend their time knitting and quilting beautiful bed coverings for those in the community. Marguerite has a special connection with Corumbene as her mother, Patricia Tuttle, was a resident. When her mum was a resident, she had colourful quilts in her room that other residents would admire and borrow. This inspired Marguerite to make a vow in her late mother’s name to make quilts for each resident so they can have a stunning bed covering of their own.

Every week, Marguerite meets with the Caring Quilters, and she knits while they quilt. Though the group is small, and getting smaller, their determination is tireless, and they continue to produce lovely bed coverings. They enjoy seeing photos of the Corumbene residents enjoying the quilts they make.

Thank you, Marguerite and the Caring Quilters for your gorgeous quilts!
