Maggie is the Operations Manager here at Sunflower, and one of the kindest people you will ever meet. When on the look out for new Sunflowers to join the crew, she always keeps her eye out for one thing, "kindness over ego." 🌻

Meet Kai πŸ‘‹

One of our Newcastle-based support workers who joined Sunflower in 2025 after making the move from Orange, NSW. A rugby league fanatic (up the Warriors!), secret gardener, and motorbike enthusiast, Kai brings genuine care, calm energy, and a whole lot of heart to the people he supports. We’re very lucky to have him on the team 🌻

Tessa our Accommodation and Respite Coordinator at Sunflower Newcastle grabbed a spot on the couch to chat about respite 🌻

Despite respite always looking like we're jetting off on fun excursions (trust us, we do a lot of that too!) our main priority is always around achieving Participant goals and building new life skills.

So if you'd like to develop finance skills, climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, go on a trail walk, practice travel training or learn independence in the kitchen, please reach out! πŸ‘‹

Introducing Ahmed, one of our talented Specialist Support Coordinator / Psychosocial Recovery Coaches based in Adelaide 🌻

With over 13 years of experience in the disability space, Ahmed brings a calm, grounded approach to specialist support coordination, psychosocial recovery coaching, and advocacy.

He’s worked across remote Aboriginal communities in the NPY (Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara) lands and metro Adelaide, supporting people with complex psychosocial and cross-cultural needs. At the core of his work is trauma-informed care and a strong belief that participants are the experts in their own lives. Ahmed focuses on walking alongside people, helping make their journey smoother while learning from their strength and resilience along the way.

Outside of work, Ahmed is an artist and writer who explores place, memory, and community through his creative projects. He’s fluent in Arabic, currently learning Pitjantjatjara, and once studied cinematography in India, which means he still sees the world through a filmmaker’s eye. He loves travel, connecting across cultures, and spending time with his children πŸ€Έβ€β™€οΈ

Two of our Sunflowers, Katya and Abigail, headed along to Coffee and Connect, spending the morning with other like-minded NDIS providers from across Newcastle and the Hunter 🌻

It was a great chance to share ideas, learn what others are doing in the space, and talk about how we can work together to help participants get more out of their NDIS plans.

A big thank you to Flourishing Lives Disability Services and Hillebrand Shaw & Co for hosting, and to Maitland Heritage Gardens Cafe for the coffee and setting β˜•

What's a piece of advice you've heard or recommend for being a support worker? It's hard to beat an awesome pre-downloaded playlist, or a glove box full of muesli bars ahead of a big adventure! 🀩

What people think managers do at work, vs what we actually do is veeerrrry different! πŸ˜† For our Adelaide based Senior Specialist Support Coordinator Ben its a lot of planning writing, connecting with service providers on calls, meeting with new participants and their families, and occasionally peering wistfully across the office πŸ˜‚

We had to ask the burning question on everyone's mind, would you rather swim with crocodiles or sharks? 🦈 Drop your answer in the comments below!

Make sure you pop in and say hi next time you're near one of the Sunflower offices, we'd love to say g'day!

We're on a mission to provide expert support, care and compassion for individuals with disabilities Australia wide, and every new Sunflower friend counts! 🌻

One HR practice we will never compromise on is Psychological Safety.

At Sunflower, psychological safety means creating a workplace where people feel safe to ask for help, speak up, take considered risks, admit mistakes, and share new ideas without fear of judgement or embarrassment.

We want our Sunflowers to feel comfortable exploring new pathways, collaborating openly, and finding better, more participant-focused solutions together.
Because when people feel supported, trusted, and safe, that’s where growth, creativity, and great care truly begin 🌻
