As childbirth became more medicalised, birth started moving from the home where birthing women would be cared for by wise women and into the hospitals where male surgeons and scientists claimed the domain. The field of obstetrics was born 💰

The maternity system that we have today still operates on many outdated and harmful procedures.

Interventions like episiotomies or forceps for example are being incredibly overused unnecessarily causing more harm than good.

Has the field of obstetrics changed that much when it comes to understanding birth at all? Or are we still being experimented on?

🚩 If you are wanting an intervention free physiological birth, an obstetrician should not be your first point of call.
Obstetricians are trained surgeons there for true emergencies if we need them. They are not familiar with nor have likely ever seen an intervention-free physiological birth.

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve heard, “oh my gosh my baby’s cord was around their neck! It was so scary!”

And it’s understandable why, when we’ve been so heavily brainwashed to fear our pregnant bodies and birth, surely we and our babies must need saving from the entire experience!?

Wrong, the overwhelming majority of women & babies do not need interference whatsoever.

It’s time we end the fear around this one! 🤎

When women are coming out of their births confused, let down and carrying trauma, a question that often pops up is, “why didn’t they honour my birth plan?”

I feel it’s time we start calling it for what it is, - it’s an advocacy plan. Especially if you’re birthing within the hospital or even with midwives in your home.

Your birth plan/advocacy plan is for you, your partner, & doula, to ensure what you want and don’t want is upheld and respected.

I’ve personally witnessed birth plans being laughed at, women being told, “your expectations for birth are unrealistic, you’ll have an easier time if you just go with the flow.”

It’s really not hard to understand why birth trauma is higher than 1 in 3 when we’ve got people saying this rubbish to women 🚩

When you’ve got ‘care’ providers telling women to go with the flow and ditch their wants for birth, you know it’s time to get serious about you & your baby’s experience.

Sit down with your birth support and voice what you want and don’t want so they know when to step in for you.

Birth for the majority is not a medical event, it’s a physiological process.

Anything that disturbs the physiological process has the ability to delay or derail your birth.

A vaginal exam in a physiological birth is an unnecessary intervention.

Any ‘care’ providers wanting to look between your legs for the sake of it can & should be shown the door.

Even in the thick of labour, you can STILL fire your ‘care’ provider.

You hold ALL of the power 🤎

The classic “I’m just going to” is said to women day in day out within the maternity system followed by the immediate action with zero informed consent gained from a mother.

There is no such thing as valid informed consent when this term is used.

Women must ALWAYS be given all of the information so they can make an informed decision. Being respected enough to be given the benefits/risks or choice to do nothing is your basic human right.

This type of language “I’m just going to” is noticeable during pregnancy. It’s designed to remind you who’s in charge of you, your body, & baby.

Don’t let this language slip by, call it out 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Just as I trust women through pregnancy & birth, I also trust & support their decisions postpartum.

I stand for breastfeeding but I also stand for all of these if that is what a woman is making an informed decision to do. Mothers know exactly what they need when they are lovingly supported throughout their unique journey.

Meeting women where they are is true support 🤎
🌸 Any non related comments or comments trying to belittle mothers for breastfeeding, pumping, hand expressing, using donor breastmilk, mix feeding, or formula feeding will be deleted. I don’t take breastfeeding education or any other forms of feeding lightly. If you are a new mother who is struggling and need support, social media is not the place to be sitting on. If the issues are beyond what your doula can provide, it’s time to search for a local IBCLC in your area as soon as you can, most will be able to come to your home within 24hrs 🏡

From a personal standpoint, I have never done hypnobirthing simply because I’ve never felt I needed it.

Some women do find hypnobirthing to be a good tool for them, there is no right or wrong.

One thing you cannot do is expect a hypnobirthing course to do your inner work. That’s not how the journey of pregnancy & birth works.

I’m not against hypnobirthing, but I am against -
👉🏽 Hypnobirthing practitioners promising the false illusion of being able to control yourself during labour.
👉🏽 Women thinking they NEED to avoid every sensation during labour.
👉🏽 Women outsourcing their inner work to a course.

Doing a hypnobirthing course with any of these reasons in mind will not help you for labour.
