Understanding the Difference: Legally Appointed Guardian vs. Parent for Adults with Disability

Did you know there’s a difference between a parent’s role and a legally appointed guardian for adults with disabilities? 🤔 Here’s what you need to know:

🔸Parent
~ A parent continues to support their adult child’s decisions after they turn 18, but their role is not legally binding unless they are appointed as a nominee for the NDIS.
~ Parents may help with day-to-day decisions and provide emotional support.
~ Parents can assist with Supported Decision Making, helping their adult child understand choices and make informed decisions.

🔸Legally Appointed Guardian
~ A guardian is appointed by a court or tribunal when an adult cannot make personal or health decisions independently.
~ Guardians can make important decisions about where someone lives, their healthcare, and other personal matters.
~ Guardians do not automatically have authority over an adult’s NDIS plan. To manage NDIS decisions, a Plan Nominee Form must be completed and submitted along with the official guardianship paperwork.

Both roles are essential in ensuring the rights, well-being, and best interests of adults with disabilities.

✨ Rest isn’t just sleep. ✨

According to Dr Saundra Dalton-Smith, there are 7 types of rest — and burnout often comes from missing the right one.

🛌 Physical rest – sleep & slowing down
🧠 Mental rest – quieting a busy mind
💛 Emotional rest – being real without masking
👥 Social rest – time with people who restore you
📵 Sensory rest – less noise, screens & stimulation
🎨 Creative rest – inspiration without pressure
🙏 Spiritual rest – connection, purpose & meaning

Sometimes the question isn’t “Why am I so tired?”
It’s “What kind of rest am I missing?

⚠️ NDIS Update: STA is now STR

What used to be Short Term Accommodation (STA) is now Short Term Respite (STR) 🏡
This change better reflects the real purpose — a short break for participants and a well-earned rest for informal carers.

From October 2025, guidelines are tighter — STR must be for genuine respite, not a holiday.

🔹 What’s Changed?

🆕 New name, same support
• STA ➜ STR across all NDIS guidelines

Clear purpose
• Time for informal supports to rest
• Participant receives usual daily care

Eligibility tightened
• For people relying on significant informal support (approx. 6+ hrs/day)
• Not for participants who can live independently

Funding boundaries
• Covers standard accommodation + disability-related support
• Extras may not be included:
Transport
Meals (in individual settings)
Activities and outings
Must be stationary + within Australia 🇦🇺

✅ Approval and Plan-Check Needed
Before booking STR, you must:
• Be approved for STR as part of your plan reassessment
• Confirm STR funding is included in your NDIS plan
👉 To check — reach out to your LAC, Support Coordinator, or contact NDIA directly

What STR isn’t for…
❌ Holidays, cruises or overseas travel
❌ Skill-building or personal development stays (while you will be supported with skill building during your stay, the purpose of STR will not for this reason)
❌ Event attendance or entertainment
❌ Luxury or lifestyle extras beyond usual support needs
These needs may be supported under other plan supports, but not under STR.

Get ready for your NDIS Plan Reassessment Meeting! 📝 Planning is key to getting the right supports for your next plan.

Here’s a quick prep checklist:

✅ Reflect & Report:
• What worked well in your current plan?
• What didn’t work or were you unable to use?
• How have you progressed towards your goals? Be specific!
• Gather reports from your therapists/providers (ask for these early!). They should detail progress, outcomes, and recommendations for the next plan.

✅ Look Ahead:
• What are your new goals for the next 1-3 years? (Think work, study, home, community, skills).
• Have your circumstances changed (health, living situation, support needs)?
• Do you need new or different supports (like Assistive Technology, more hours, different therapies)? Make a list and get quotes/evidence where possible.

✅ Meeting Day:
• Write down all your questions beforehand.
• Bring a support person (family, friend, Support Coordinator) who knows you and your needs well.
• Be honest about the support you need—don’t downplay your challenges!

🌟 NDIS Individualised Living Options (ILO) 🌟

Individualised Living Options (ILO) is an NDIS support that helps you create a living arrangement that’s right for you. 🏡✨

With an ILO, you get to:
✅ Choose where you live – apartment, unit, house, with family, or with others
✅ Decide who you live with – friends, family, housemates, or on your own
✅ Shape the supports you need – like drop-in support, host arrangements, or shared living supports
✅ Build skills, independence, and community connections in a way that suits your life

🔑 Good to know:
ILO does not cover rent, food, utilities, or personal expenses — these remain your responsibility

ILO is all about choice and control — creating a home life that truly works for you, not a one-size-fits-all model.

Understanding Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding in the NDIS.

A key distinction that is often misunderstood is what SIL funding covers. It’s designed for support, not accommodation.

Here’s a clear breakdown:
SIL Funding covers:
✅ Paid support workers who assist with daily tasks.
✅ Personal care, such as showering and dressing.
✅ Meal preparation and cooking support.
✅ Household chores like cleaning and laundry.
✅ Building skills for independence (e.g., budgeting).
✅ Support for community access and social activities.

SIL Funding does NOT cover:
❌ Rent or mortgage payments.
❌ General living expenses (rent, food, groceries, utilities).
❌ General household items (furniture, appliances).

🌟 Why It’s Important to Know About the NDIS 🌟

The NDIS, or National Disability Insurance Scheme, is here to help people with disabilities live their best lives. Knowing how it works is powerful for you and your family.

🔸You’re in control. Learning about the NDIS helps you understand your rights and the different supports you can get. This means you can make your own choices about your life and what you need.

🔸Get the right support. The NDIS can fund a wide range of supports, like therapies, equipment, help around the house, and activities in your community. When you know about the NDIS, it’s easier to get the right funding for what you need to achieve your goals.

🔸Plan for the future. Having a good understanding of the NDIS helps you and your family create a plan that works for you.

🔸Your voice matters. As a family member or carer, knowing the ins and outs of the NDIS helps you be the best advocate for the person you support. It gives you the confidence to ask questions and make sure their plan truly meets their needs.

Understanding the NDIS is the first step to making the most of it. It’s a tool for you to build a stronger future.
