*The Safe and Sound Protocol*

Over the summer break I added the Safe and Sound Protocol to my toolbelt.

This non-invasive intervention involves listening to music that has been processed specifically to retune the nervous system (regulating state) to introduce a sense of safety and the ability to socially engage. This allows the client to better interpret not only human speech, but, importantly, the emotional meaning of language. Once interpersonal interactions improve, spontaneous social behaviors and an enhanced ability to learn, self-regulate and engage are often seen.

I'm so excited that I can offer this to my clients as part of their therapy to improve social engagement, state regulation, and attention.

Please be advised I am taking some leave with my family from 12 March 2024 to 19 March 2024. I'll periodically check my emails during this time but will not be doing appointments or receiving phone calls.

Thank you for your understanding and look forward to seeing you on my return.

*The Power of Attachment*

At the end of 2023 I participated in a professional development course focusing on utilising relationship based, developmental and trauma informed approaches in Occupational Therapy.

So much information that I'm still absorbing but the main take away being:

The experiences children have early in life including the emotional interactions between children and their primary caregivers, and the
environments in which they occur, shape children’s neurological, physical and psychosocial development. Supportive relationships with the adults around them, give children a sense of security that builds a foundation for resilience across childhood and into adulthood, that can influence lifelong outcomes for learning, behaviour, physical and mental health.

The day has come!

So excited for the kids and families I support who are starting school today. So much of the work we have done to date has been for this moment.

****Congratulations****

At the end of last year I continued to capitalise on the extensive time I spend in the car by listening to another one of my professional crushes. This one took a lot longer then it should have. I found myself applying the information to a range of my previous and current clients and having to repeat chapters constantly as it provided a deeper understanding on what is going on for them.

I've been considering adding Dr Porges Safe and Sound Protocol to my toolbelt and will read or listen to each book, podcast or lecture he completes. Watch this space for when the program become available at SagePOT.

Stephen Porges proposed the polyvagal theory in 1994 with the basic idea that the level of safety we feel impacts our health and happiness. It helps individuals and carers understand why our bodies sometimes act in ways our brains wish they didn't.

A felt sense of safety is first and foremost when commencing therapy with Sage Paediatric OT. Sometimes this is achieved quite quickly, other times it can take a few sessions.

When one feels 'safe' they are more social, engaged, and responsive to their own emotional needs.

Feeling safe, stable and secure is essential to our health and wellbeing.

Sage Paediatric OT starts back today for 2024 and OMG I'm excited.

I have a full day catching up with some little buddies and even meeting some new ones.

I have some exciting things happening this year which will be so beneficial to the little buddies I work with, their families and even myself. Cant wait to share this news when it all comes to life. Watch this space.....

While I'm excited for some family time and a summer break the last four months of being Sage Paediatric OT has been an absolute blast.

I am loving the flexibility to provide services that I think works best for myself, my family and the families I support.

I am so proud of the achievements the little buddies I spend time with have made like writing their names, playing well with peers, managing challenging situations better and using their individualised regulation strategies, attending to tasks for longer, becoming more independent with their activities of daily living and obtaining a greater felt sense of safety in their environments and within themselves. I want to thank the parents, carers and educators that have made this possible. Without you, the real day to day learning doesn't happen.

From my family to yours, Merry Christmas. I hope its filled with laughs, love and Christmas treats.

Carly

Will catch you all in 2024.

Being a mobile OT I spend a LOT of time in the car. Audio books (and spotify) have become my go to entertainment on my work days between clients.

Last month I was recommended 'The Explosive Child' by Dr Ross Greene from one of the parents I'm working with. I have been a fan of Dr Ross Greene for some time and he didn't disappoint with this fourth edition.

Dr Greene encourages a collaborative problem solving approach particularly with children who lack some crucial skills in the areas of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance and problem solving. They require a different approach to parenting.

This satisfying combination of shaving cream (~2 cups), corn flour (~1cup) and some paint made the most soft and fluffy dough. My girls spent ages molding cupcakes, donuts and hiding objects in it.

For my tactile defensive friends, freezing the dough made it less sticky/slimy and more crumbly. We hid some dinosaurs to find and there was no holding back! As the dough defrosted it became softer and was able to be molded again. Keep a wet washer close by and offer gloves and a spoon if needed.

This fun and messy activity worked as a great fine motor warm up. Regulation, finger strength, pincer grip and sensory processing. Using a scented shaving cream added a beautiful lemon and lime experience also.

Deep and mindful breathing calms our body and mind.

Engaging your core and noticing your thoughts and emotions.

Regulating and organising our nervous systems.

I do this in session with my little buddies by engaging in play through bubbles, straws, feathers, pom poms and balloons to name a few.
