If you’ve been wondering, “Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?” this might be why.
Perimenopause isn’t just hot flushes. It’s stress axis dysregulation.
Hormone fluctuations. Histamine changes. Nervous system overload.
When the HPA axis (stress) and HPO axis (ovaries) are both under pressure, emotional resilience drops.
That “care factor zero” feeling?
It’s often cortisol + progesterone shifts not a personality flaw.
And when histamine rises alongside hormonal change, many women suddenly feel reactive, inflamed or sensitive to everything.
This is where personalised care matters.
Because perimenopause doesn’t need to feel chaotic when we support the body properly, stability returns.
If you’re ready for answers, our initial consults are currently 50% off.

If you feel wired but exhausted… snappy by 4pm… and completely drained but unable to sleep properly…
That’s not just “mum life”
That’s hormone fatigue
Most mums are under-eating protein, over-relying on caffeine and running on a dysregulated nervous system.
And the fix isn’t pushing harder.
It’s:
✔ stabilising blood sugar (especially at breakfast)
✔ supporting your nervous system with the right nutrients
✔ reducing caffeine dependence
✔ improving sleep quality — even if it’s interrupted
When we support the body properly, energy improves.
Patience improves.
Resilience improves.
You don’t need another coffee. You need a strategy.
If your hormones haven’t felt the same since having kids, we can help you restore balance properly not just mask the symptoms.

Meal prep isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about making healthy choices easier when life gets busy.
Because when nothing’s prepped, energy dips, cravings spike and suddenly takeaway feels like the only option.
(We’ve all been there.)
A little prep ahead of time means:
✔ More stable energy
✔ Better blood sugar balance
✔ Fewer “what should I eat?” moments
✔ Less stress during the week
And no, it doesn’t need to take hours or turn your Sunday into a punishment. Even simple staples prepped once can completely change how your week feels.
✨ Start small.
✨ Stay consistent.
✨ Let food work for your body, not against it.
If you’re struggling with low energy, cravings, gut issues or feeling overwhelmed around food, this is exactly where we help.

Headaches, hives, nausea… but no clear answers? 🤯
It might not be stress, hormones or “just allergies.”
Everyday exposures like flowers 🌸, gardening 🌿, perfumes, air fresheners and scented products can trigger symptoms in people with salicylate or chemical intolerances.
These reactions aren’t random — they’re signals from your body asking for support.
We identify the cause and build a personalised plan to reduce triggers, support detox pathways and get you feeling clear-headed again.

You can feel unwell long before your blood tests flag it.
“Healthy” foods can still trigger inflammation.
And pushing your body harder doesn’t always mean healing faster.
Autoimmune conditions need support, not punishment.
If you’ve been told “your labs are normal” but you don’t feel normal — you deserve a deeper look 🤍

If you’ve ever felt anxious and bloated at the same time — you’re not imagining it 🤍
Your gut and brain are deeply connected through the gut–brain axis, a complex communication network involving your nervous system, hormones, immune system, and gut bacteria. It’s a two-way street: stress can disrupt digestion, and gut issues can fuel anxiety.
Here’s what many people don’t realise 👇
🦠 Your microbiome helps regulate mood
Around 90% of serotonin (your feel-good neurotransmitter) is made in the gut. Certain gut bacteria also produce GABA, which helps calm the nervous system. When gut bacteria are out of balance — due to stress, antibiotics, poor diet, or inflammation — mood regulation can suffer.
⚡ Anxiety impacts digestion
When you’re stressed, your body switches into fight-or-flight mode. Digestion slows, stomach acid drops, and food isn’t broken down properly. Over time this can lead to bloating, reflux, nutrient deficiencies, SIBO, and ongoing gut inflammation — which then feeds back into anxiety.
🔁 It becomes a loop
Gut issues → anxiety
Anxiety → gut issues
Breaking the cycle means supporting both.
✨ What helps:
• Nourishing gut bacteria with fibre & the right fermented foods
• Reducing sugar, alcohol & ultra-processed foods
• Slowing down at meals (chewing + breathing matters more than you think)
• Personalised gut and nervous system support — not one-size-fits-all advice
If mindset work alone hasn’t eased your anxiety, or your gut symptoms keep hanging around, it may be time to look deeper. Your gut and brain are on the same team — and when one is supported, the other often follows.
👉 If you’re ready to get to the root of your anxiety and support your gut properly, book an appointment with one of our qualified naturopaths or nutritionists.

✨ Your uterus may have a flair for drama… but you have the tools (and support!) to take back control.

If your child reacts after meals — mood swings, bloating, hyperactivity — it’s not misbehaviour.
It’s their body trying to tell you something about gut health, food sensitivities, or blood sugar regulation.
Early awareness can make mornings calmer, energy more stable, and reduce stress for everyone.
This year, let’s start by listening to their body — not just forcing routine. 💛

If you’re managing Hashimoto’s and only focusing on your thyroid… this might be your missing piece…
Around 70% of your immune system lives in your gut.
When the gut is inflamed, leaky, or out of balance, it can keep your immune system in overdrive - and that can mean continued thyroid attacks.
✨ Gut support can help:
✔ Reduce immune activation
✔ Calm inflammation
✔ Support thyroid health long-term
If you’re not sure where to start, our naturopath Kate can help you uncover what’s driving the immune response and create a plan that supports your gut, immune system and thyroid 🤍

Mullen Natural Health Centre has been serving the community of Newcastle in some form since 1958. While Peter Mullen has owned and lead the current business for nearly three decades, its history stretches back 60 years.
Our Family business is home to Naturopaths and nutritionists whom are experts in treating anxiety, mental health, women’s health, gut heath, thyroid health as well as childrens’ health. Our practice in Hamilton hosts our consult rooms and the Herb Bar, leading the way in over the counter natural medicines where drop-in consults are held . We are an all-in-one for acute care as well as symptomatic, long term and wellness health care.
Peter Mullen grew up in a very health-focused family, so it was only natural that he would go on to pursue a career in health. After achieving his degree in Naturopathy at the NSW College of Natural Therapies, Peter was lucky enough to return to his hometown of Newcastle to work for McKay BioChemist in 1989 - a time when very few people were hiring Naturopaths.
The practice was established by Clary McKay in 1958, and was one of the only natural health clinics in the region. The McKays had a fantastic reputation and people would queue down the stairs to see the McKays at HP Chambers in Hamilton.
With the help and encouragement of his then-girlfriend (now wife) Dayna, Peter managed to scrape together enough money to buy the business in 1992. Despite it being a struggle at the time to make ends meet, they have never looked back.
1993 was a huge year for the business - Peter started his monthly visits to Singleton on Saturdays with our Care Assistant Mary, who still accompanies him all these years later.
It was also the year Dayna purchased the block of land behind HP Chambers with the vision of building the Murray Street practice. Two years, many thousands of dollars of debt, and one child later, they had built the beautiful new practice that the business still occupies today.
At the time, Peter was the only practitioner. Today, we have six Naturopaths with a wide range of specialities treating patients every week.
Mullen Natural Health Centre is built on the principles of honesty, integrity, and respect, and Peter believes he owes much of his success to upholding these principles.
After nearly 30 years of practice, Peter has been fortunate enough to help hundreds of people get to the bottom of their health conditions and get back on the path to wellness. The thing he loves the most about working in the same practice all this time is the privilege of treating four generations of the same family - Peter still sees some clients he treated in his very first month of practice with the McKays.
Throughout his career, Peter has witnessed Australia’s obesity crisis, the exponential use of antibiotics and increasing issues with the health of our kids. While it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the state of our health, Peter is encouraged by the increasing number of people who are thinking about their health in a holistic way, and using their own intuition to listen to their bodies to find a natural path to wellness.
Our Naturopaths specialise in treating the cause of your symptoms. Please reach out to us so we can help you to Be Well Naturally.
