๐จ Parvovirus Alert: There have been confirmed parvovirus cases in the local area, with clusters reported in Hamilton South and Windale. We have recently seen a case at NLVC and want to ensure our community stays informed and prepared- it may only be a matter of time before more cases pop up in other areas.
What is Parvovirus?
Parvo is a highly contagious and life-threatening virus that can affect un-vaccinated dogs, with puppies usually being the most high-risk.
Common Symptoms to Watch For:
โข Severe diarrhoea (blood may be present)
โข Frequent vomiting
โข Lethargy or weakness
โข Loss of appetite
โข Fever
โข Dehydration
If you notice any of these signs, please contact a vet immediately. Early treatment is critical.
How to Protect Your Dog:
โ
Vaccinate โ This is the most effective protection. Ensure your dogโs vaccinations are always kept up to date. Puppies require a full vaccination course (3 vaccinations in total), not just one shot, and are not considered 'fully vaccinated' until TWO WEEKS following their third vaccine.
โ
Avoid high-risk areas โ Keep unvaccinated puppies away from parks, nature strips, and public spaces where dogs frequent. Until fully vaccinated, keep puppies within your yard.
โ
Practice good hygiene โ Parvo can survive in the environment for long periods. Clean shoes, leads, and surfaces after visiting public areas, and avoid contact with unknown dogs.
