It’s emerging in all cancers, but particularly in the MPNs, that “genomics is everything” according to Professor Andrew Perkins, an expert in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).

Patients in Australia should not miss out on treatments that are available overseas; your postcode or country should not dictate which cancer treatments you can access.

The ALLG and HSANZ welcomes the Report and its 31 recommendations, tabled in Parliament 25/11/21, for better approval processes of new drugs and novel medical technologies in Australia. Well done to the Committee for their very thorough research and great consideration of the health sector in preparing this report.

In particular, the ALLG and HSANZ supports the recommendation that our country not only develops our own research capacity but, more importantly, ensures patients have early access to life changing drugs and technologies.

We are excited for what the future could hold for Australia’s blood cancer community, and we’ll continue to advocate for improvements.

Further action is now needed to address the barriers and limitations to patient drug access in Australia. Read our joint statement here https://tinyurl.com/3zj33ds8

What a privilege to be present at the Mark Hughes Foundation Brain Cancer forum today. The sense of community and the strength in the room was palpable. Thank you so much to our amazing brain cancer care coordinators Alisha, Amy, Sandy, Nicole and Natasha for organising such a wonderful day and for the endless support you provide to the patient and research communities.

Today was International Clinical Trials Day, a day where we stop and recognise the army of doctors, nurses, trial coordinators, scientists and support teams needed to facilitate high quality clinical trials.

Our team are incredibly privileged to partner with inspiring local investigators and cooperative research groups to support trials not only in cancer but diabetes, multiple sclerosis, maternal health and a number of other areas.

If you're interested in learning more about clinical research or the ways in which our team support research in the Hunter, we'd love to hear from you!

Yesterday we celebrated the wonderful women in our lives; the mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, aunts, big sisters and close friends. What many of us may have missed was that Saturday 8 May was just as important for women all over the world - World Ovarian Cancer Day.

Each day in Australia, four women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Three will die from the disease.

It is estimated that 1,510 Australian women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year, and 1,046 women will die – that’s one woman every eight hours.

The overall five-year survival rate for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer is 46% compared to 91% for breast cancer. It's time that changed.

The signs of ovarian cancer are things all women experience regularly so if something doesn't feel right - don't dismiss it. Too many of our mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers and friends are lost to this disease. Together we can advocate for awareness, for funding, for research and for change.
