If you, or an older friend or family member is feeling anxious, distressed or overwhelmed, it’s important to know that help is available, often at no cost.

Support options to be aware of:

🧠 Medicare Mental Health Centres
These centres provide free, walk-in mental health support with no referral needed. They offer a safe place to talk with qualified mental health professionals. Visit https://www.medicarementalhealth.gov.au/medicare-mental-health-centres

👩‍⚕️Talk to a GP
A GP is often a great first step. They can listen, provide reassurance and help connect your loved one with appropriate mental health or counselling support.

📞 Beyond Blue - 1300 22 4636
Free phone and online support for anxiety, depression and emotional wellbeing, available to older Australians and their families.

💡Support at Home funding
If your loved one receives Support at Home funding, they can access psychology and counselling services as part of their clinical care, with no out-of-pocket cost. Talk to your/their provider about accessing mental health services.

CHSP or Support at Home? 🤔

One of the most common questions we've had from older Queenslanders since the new system started is about the differences between the Commonwealth Health Support Programme and Support at Home program - the funding differences, the pros and cons, the diverse spelling of programme/program 😂

👋 Meet the rather excellent Shyra.

Shyra is Envigor’s Care Services Manager for Brisbane North and the City of Moreton Bay. She’s spent more than a decade helping older people and their families, making sure they have the support, confidence and care to stay safely at home.

What stands out most isn’t the experience (though there’s plenty of that). It’s her conviction. Shyra shows up every day with a genuine belief that people deserve to live independently, on their terms, for as long as possible. And she pours that belief into every care plan, every conversation, every small moment that makes someone’s day a little easier.

We’re very lucky to have her.

Sadly, it says a lot when this is our most popular blog in the past year (tens of thousands of people searching for it and reading it since we published it).

Loneliness and isolation among older Australians is heart-breaking - and it's getting worse.

Home care organisations are perfectly placed to help, but it will be interesting to see how the Support at Home changes affect people utilising social support services.

Losing your spouse can create a void that can never be filled. With that void can come an overwhelming feeling of loneliness and it is important to know that you are not alone and there are many support options.
