REST
What is rest?
Verb:
To cease work or movement in order to relax, sleep, or recover.
Noun:
An instance or period of resting.
Getting enough sleep but not feeling ‘rested’?
The ‘how much energy we have’ puzzle consists of a few pieces including but not limited to: 🧩
Pathology / metabolic changes / illness
Diet
Sleep
Emotional continuum
Social interaction
Physical exertion
Relationships / family / friends
Work
Thinking
And the rest of the demands of our life; meaning/value, purpose and responsibility.
One piece of the puzzle that can be askew is the type of rest we require. These are:
- Physical rest: passive i.e. sleeping/napping and active i.e yoga, mobility work,
- Mental rest: short breaks, writing, a change of scenery
- Sensory rest: unplugging (literally) from our sensory overloaded world
- Creative rest: having a different environment that does not curtail innovative thought or one that allows consolidation i.e nature
- Emotional rest: setting aside time to be with yourself, having space held for you to connect with how you are feeling and for that to be understood
- Social rest: spending time with the people that nourish us, not deplete us
- Spiritual rest: to receive this, engage in something greater than yourself i.e adding a gratitude practice, meditation, prayer or community involvement/ volunteering to your routine.
