Alert! Your Desk is Working You 🚨

Your desk has been plotting against your neck, shoulders, and lower back all day. And yes, it’s winning. Time to fight back with more practical moves:
🦵March in place under your desk to get your blood flowing
✋ Gently extend your wrists and open your hands to counter all that typing
👣 Roll your ankles in circles to ease stiffness,
📦 Or stand up and hinge at the hips like you’re picking up a light package to wake up your posterior chain.

Even a couple of minutes every hour helps your body reset and keeps your brain alert.

Which of these desk-defence moves will you try first? Or do you have your own mini-escape routine? Share your hacks below! 👇

Stand tall - your spine is always watching 👀

Small posture checks can make a big difference. Think ears stacked over shoulders, shoulders gently back and down, and your screen positioned at eye level. Simple ergonomic adjustments - such as altering chair height, bringing the keyboard closer, and using lumbar support - can help reduce unnecessary strain on the cervical and thoracic spine.

Add short daily exercises to reinforce alignment. Chin tucks activate the deep neck flexors. Thoracic extensions over a chair encourage upper back mobility. Scapular retraction drills promote improved shoulder positioning. Just a few minutes each day can help your spine distribute load more efficiently 💪

If you would like personalised guidance, book a posture assessment or quick workstation review with us here at Our Chiro.

Your neck is curved for a reason 😊

The cervical lordosis is the natural inward curve of your neck. It helps support the weight of your head - around 4 to 5 kilograms - and acts as a shock absorber during daily movement. This curve distributes load evenly through the vertebrae, discs and muscles.

When this curve reduces, which is often seen with forward head posture or prolonged screen time, muscles and joints can experience altered loading. An exaggerated curve can also change how forces move through the neck. Over time, these changes may contribute to stiffness or strain.

Postural awareness and targeted rehabilitation can help support healthy cervical alignment.

Strengthening the deep neck flexors, improving upper back mobility and addressing shoulder position all play an important role 💪

It is not about chasing a “perfect” curve - it is about helping your neck function well, move efficiently and tolerate the demands of everyday life.

“Nervous” comes from the Latin nervus, meaning “sinew, tendon, or nerve,” while “system” comes from Latin systema, borrowed from the Greek sústēma, meaning “an organised whole” (syn- = together, histemi = to set up). Put together, the term paints a vivid picture: a network of nerves standing together in coordination to carry messages from brain to body (and back again).

Chiropractic care helps this remarkable system function smoothly. By working to ensure the spine moves freely, adjustments aim to reduce interference along nerve pathways, supporting efficient communication that underpins movement, sensation, and overall wellbeing.

💡 Fun thought: each stretch, shiver, or heartbeat is your nervous system telling its story - a living demonstration of nervus and systema in action!

Healthy spine habits at home 🏡

Your spine supports you in almost everything you do, so it’s worth doing everything you can to support it in return.

Always bend from the knees, not the back, even when picking up the laundry basket 🧺. Try standing on one leg while brushing your teeth or waiting for the kettle, switch which side you carry your bag or groceries to avoid repetitive strain, and take “micro-movement breaks” every hour - roll your shoulders, gently twist your torso, or do a pelvic tilt 🔄.

Even how you sleep matters: a pillow that supports the natural curve of your neck and a mattress that keeps your spine aligned can make a big difference 🛏️.

💡 Small, consistent habits like these help keep your spine flexible, strong, and resilient.

Easter is all about fresh starts… and chocolate eggs, and perhaps a little overindulgence 🍫🐣
While you are hunting for eggs, spare a thought for your spine. Long car trips, extra time on the sofa, and a few too many hours bent over helping little ones decode their treasure maps can leave your back feeling less than spring-ready.

Just like the season, your body can benefit from a reset. Gentle movement, a walk after lunch, simple mobility exercises and a quick check-in with your chiro may help keep your spine feeling supported and mobile 🌷 Movement encourages circulation, joint nutrition and muscle activation - all important for spinal health.

Chiropractic care focuses on how your joints, muscles and nervous system work together. So if your back feels more scrambled than your eggs, we are here to help 🐰
Happy Easter from everyone at Our Chiro.

Chiropractic is more than just adjustments - it’s a way of understanding and supporting the body. As a science, it draws on evidence about the spine, nervous system, and biomechanics to guide safe and effective care. As an art, it uses hands-on skill, intuition, and experience to tailor each treatment to the individual, recognising that no two bodies move or respond the same way. And as a philosophy, it embraces the idea that your body can function optimally when given the right conditions, including alignment, mobility, and lifestyle support.

💡 Takeaway: Chiropractic isn’t just about managing pain - it’s about understanding the body as a connected, dynamic system and guiding it toward better health. Every adjustment, consultation, and piece of advice reflects this holistic approach.

Signs your spine needs attention…
Your spine supports everything you do, from standing and walking to bending and twisting - and it also sends signals when something isn’t quite right.

Watch for recurring headaches 🤯, stiffness or tightness in your back or neck 🪑, reduced mobility 🤸‍♂️, poor posture 🧍‍♀️, or nerve-related symptoms like tingling, numbness, or shooting pain ⚡.
💡 Catching these early can help prevent more serious issues later on.

If any of that sounds familiar 💻book an appointment online today at www.ourchiro.com.au and give your spine the care it deserves.

Shoulder, hip, and joint pain 🦴💥

When joints are not moving as smoothly as they should, everyday activities can start to feel harder than they need to be. Reduced joint mechanics may place extra strain on surrounding muscles and tissues, which can contribute to discomfort and ongoing irritation over time. How? When one joint is not doing its share of the work, others often compensate, which can spread strain through the body over time. For example, the hips connect directly into the pelvis (which connects directly with the spine) so irritation or restricted movement there can influence how the lower back moves, or even refer discomfort down the leg… 🦵

Chiropractic care focuses on assessing how joints move and how the body distributes load. By supporting joint mobility and movement patterns, care may help reduce unnecessary stress through the joints and support the body’s natural ability to settle inflammation and adapt to daily demands.
If shoulder, hip, or joint pain is limiting how you move, exercise, or get through the day, it may be worth having it checked. To book an appointment or learn more head to www.OurChiro.com.au

Poor posture and tech neck 📱

Hours spent looking down at phones, laptops, and tablets can place extra strain through the neck, shoulders, and upper spine. Over time, these modern habits may contribute to postural changes and movement patterns that feel tight, fatigued, or uncomfortable.

“Tech neck” is a term often used to describe this forward head posture. When the head sits forward of the shoulders, the spine and surrounding muscles have to work harder to support it. That extra load can add up, especially across a long workday.

Chiropractic care looks at how the spine is moving and adapting to these daily demands. The focus is on improving mobility, supporting better posture awareness, and helping the body handle screen time more efficiently, rather than avoiding it altogether. (We know that’s not realistic.) This timeless idea sits at the heart of traditional chiropractic philosophy. It reflects the view that the body has an inherent capacity to adapt and regulate itself, particularly when movement is supported and unnecessary strain is reduced.

Rather than seeing the body as something that simply needs to be “fixed,” this perspective focuses on supporting healthy movement, joint function, and overall musculoskeletal balance. The aim is not to promise cures, but to work with the body in a way that encourages comfort, mobility, and resilience.
Modern chiropractic care blends this philosophy with contemporary clinical understanding. Care is tailored to the individual, with an emphasis on function, movement quality, and long-term well-being.

For many people, this way of thinking feels empowering. It shifts the focus from quick fixes to awareness, consistency, and caring for the whole person.

Word of the Day: Muscle 💪📚

The word muscle comes from the Latin musculus, meaning “little mouse”. Ancient Romans thought that when a muscle moved under the skin, particularly in the arm, it looked like a mouse darting about. Or did they?

The idea did not, in fact, start with the Romans. Ancient Greek physicians had already named muscle using the word mys (or myos), which also meant “mouse”. The Romans borrowed heavily from Greek medical knowledge, so the Latin term is widely thought to be influenced by this earlier Greek imagery rather than invented independently.

That Greek root is still with us today. You can spot myo- in medical terms like myology (the study of muscles) and myofascial, linking modern anatomy back to ancient observation. In chiropractic care, muscles matter because they work closely with the spine and nervous system to support movement and posture.

Language, movement, and history all flex together here 🐭💪
