Why STI Testing Should Be Part of Your Health Routine 💕by Dr Elly Harris
When was the last time you had testing for a s*xually transmitted infection (STI)? 🤔 If you can’t remember, you’re not alone. Many people often neglect this important aspect of their health, but regular STI testing is vital for maintaining overall well-being. 💪
Did You Know? 🤓
1. Chlamydia is the most commonly reported communicable disease in Australia 🇦🇺, and the scary part is, it often has no symptoms. 🚫
2. Despite being symptom-free, chlamydia can lead to severe complications, including pelvic infections and even infertility in women. 😷❌
3. The number of syphilis cases in 2024 was more than double the number of cases reported in 2014. In 2025, syphilis resulted in two stillbirths and one baby born with the infection. 😢
4. Syphilis is preventable and treatable in its early stages, but if left untreated, it can cause serious health issues, including permanent disability or even death. ⚠️
Who Should Get Tested?
Everyone should make STI testing part of their health routine, but certain groups are at greater risk and need to be more vigilant: 👀
1. Sexually active Western Australians, especially those between the ages of 16 to 49, should regularly get tested.
2. Young people under 30, First Nations people, men who have s*x with men, trans and gender-diverse people, their partners, and pregnant individuals are at the highest risk. 🌈🤰
3. Anyone who has a new s*xual partner, lives or travels to areas with a high prevalence of infections, has been exposed to an STI, or has had a previous STI should also get tested. 🆘
What You Should Do 📝
1. Use condoms – a simple, effective way to reduce the risk of STIs. 🛑🦠
2. See your GP – even if you don’t have any symptoms, it’s important to get tested. 👩⚕️✅
What Happens When You Visit Your GP? 🏥
When you go to see your GP, they will:
1. Ask a few questions to understand your risk and guide you on the most appropriate tests. 🤔
2. If you’re not showing any symptoms, testing typically involves a simple self-collected swab or urine test, along with a blood test to screen for a range of STIs. 🧪
A Quick Reminder 🗣️
Remember, STI testing is quick, easy, and important for your health and the health of your partners. 💕 If you haven’t been tested in a while, now is the perfect time to make it a priority. ✔️
Stay healthy, stay informed, and take control of your well-being! 🌱
