Community Access - Melbourne Sealife Aquarium May 2nd 2023
Hurdle NDIS participants had a fantastic day getting out into the community and explored the Melbourne Sealife Aquarium.
The highlight of the day was the Jellyfish Lab Tour, where we were all able to gain a behind the scenes look into how the scientists study Jellyfish.
Here is some feedback provided by a participant who recently visited the Melbourne Aquarium:
It had been 20 years since I’d visited the Melbourne Aquarium.
I saw Hurdle’s advertisement inviting NDIS participants to join a community outing to the Aquarium.
I hopped on the train and met the Hurdle team at Flinders Street Station for the short walk to the Aquarium. Our first stop was the Jelly Lab, where we had the opportunity to learn about the different species and see the Aquarium’s breeding program.
I found out that Jelly Fish are not really fish, they should be called Sea Jellies. After our lab experience, we followed the map around the different areas of the Aquarium. One of the standout attractions for me was visiting one of Australia’s biggest saltwater crocodile, Pinjarra who is 5 meters in length and weighs 750kg.
After walking around and seeing different sea life we headed down to Penguins Playground. I enjoyed watching the Gentoo penguins come down the slide and into the pool, showing off to us. It was lunchtime in the Playground and it was exciting to watch all the penguins line up for lunch.
The Emperor Penguins were well trained, following the keepers hand gestures to jump on the scales to weigh in before getting lunch.
After enjoying lunch together at Federation Square, we chatted about our exciting day and everything we learnt. We are all looking forward to Hurdle’s next community adventure.
