Running isn’t bad for tendons — it’s just a different type of load.
Running places very high forces through the tendon and demands fast contraction rates with every step. That’s why irritated tendons often struggle with running before they struggle with strength work.

Heavy slow tendon loading gives us what running can’t:
• A bigger collagen-building stimulus
• Slower, controlled loading that’s less likely to flare symptoms
• Better improvements in tendon stiffness and capacity over time

But running is still an important part of tendon health — it just has to come in the right amounts at the right time.

The goal of rehab is always the same:
➡️ Build tendon capacity with heavy slow loading
➡️ Progress load gradually
➡️ Return you safely to your normal running loads

Running isn’t the enemy. It’s the destination. Heavy slow strength work is the bridge that gets you there.

Not all tendon exercises are the same!

This post shows two ways to load the hamstrings — the stiff leg deadlift (lengthening load) and the hip thrust (shortening load). It illustrates how a Physio can use different parameters such as position, contraction type, muscle length, duration, rate and intensity to create tendon adaptations.

Rest can calm things down — but it’s loading that builds them back up. 💪
Tendons adapt to the loads we place on them, and regular strength training keeps them healthy and resilient.

🦵 Why your physio keeps talking about “loading your tendon”

Tendons love load. 💪 It’s how they stay strong, healthy, and resilient.
When a tendon is sore or injured, physios don’t just rest it — they reload it.

Through carefully prescribed exercise, they use load (how much, how fast, how often) to stimulate your tendon to adapt and repair.

🔹 Early on, that might mean slower, heavier exercises.
🔹 Later, it could progress to faster, sport-specific loading.

Every stage has a purpose — and your physio adjusts the load to match where your tendon is now, and where you need it to be.

Progressive overload is the principle we use to build stronger tissue such as muscles, tendons, and joint cartilage.

This post gives an example of how to progress / regress through rep ranges.
