Can ultrasound detect all birth defects?
A lot of parents think an ultrasound can pick up everything — but here’s what it can (and can’t) actually show.

Endometriosis affects around 1 in 10 women, yet many still go years without answers. Our latest article breaks down what this condition actually is, where it occurs, the symptoms to look out for, and how it’s diagnosed — in a way that’s clear, supportive and patient-friendly.
From pain that disrupts daily life, to fertility challenges, to the role of specialised ultrasound in diagnosis, the article unpacks the key information women often wish they had sooner.
If you or someone you know has been experiencing pelvic pain, heavy periods, pain with bowel movements or during in*******se, or symptoms that just don’t feel “normal,” understanding endometriosis is an important first step.
Your first pregnancy ultrasound is coming up — don’t walk in unprepared. 🤰
These are the exact steps that make the scan smoother, clearer, and way less stressful.
Every first-time mum needs this.

Amniocentesis is a diagnostic test where a small sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is collected and analysed. This fluid contains cells from the baby, which can provide important information about chromosomal or genetic conditions.
It’s not a routine pregnancy test. It’s offered when screening results, family history, or maternal age suggest a higher chance of certain abnormalities — and our team supports each patient in deciding whether this test is right for them.
Who may be offered an amniocentesis?
• Those with a high-chance result for Down syndrome or another chromosomal condition on NIPT
• Patients with high-chance findings on a nuchal screening ultrasound
• Women who have had a child with a genetic or chromosomal condition
• Parents who carry a known genetic condition or chromosomal abnormality
• Anyone wanting a diagnostic test rather than a screening test
• Parents at risk of rare metabolic disorders
How is it performed?
Amniocentesis can be done after 15 weeks of pregnancy. Using ultrasound guidance, a specialist inserts a very fine needle through the abdomen to collect a small amount of amniotic fluid — usually around one tablespoon. Throughout the procedure, ultrasound imaging ensures the needle does not touch the baby.
If amniocentesis has been recommended for you, understanding the process can help you feel more informed and supported.

Ultrasound Care began way back in 1996, in a single borrowed consulting room at the RPA Medical Centre in Newtown.
Dr Philippa Ramsay was an obstetrician/gynaecologist who sub-specialised in ultrasound. She had worked in other private ultrasound practices and as the first female O&G Ultrasound specialist in Sydney, she could see how it could be done better, with more understanding of the women's needs.
She was well supported by her colleagues who wanted their patients treated with sensitivity and care. She became busier and was soon joined by highly skilled sonographers and specialists who had a similar ethos.
The sonographers Mary McPhail and Rowena Gibson are still at Ultrasound Care 20 years later!!
And in the mean time we have added more than 40 experienced, warm and caring sonographers, genetic counsellors and female obstetricians to the team.
It is a wonderful place to work. And that was one of Philippa’s other dreams. To make a practice that she and other women would want to go, and do their best work.
