Endometriosis can show up in different ways — and many women experience only one or a few symptoms, while some have none at all. The most common sign is pelvic pain, often linked to periods, but it can also occur at other times in the cycle.

Symptoms may include:
• Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
• Pain before or during periods
• Lower back pain
• Pain when passing urine or opening bowels
• Pain during in*******se or internal exams
• Heavy or irregular periods
• Fertility challenges
• Occasional bowel bleeding

Diagnosis can be delayed because symptoms often overlap with other conditions. Targeted ultrasound — including assessment for deep infiltrating endometriosis — can play an important role in investigation.

If symptoms are ongoing or affecting your quality of life, speak with your GP or gynaecologist about appropriate assessment.

Ovarian cancer symptoms are often vague and easily mistaken for more common conditions — and some women may have no symptoms at all.

Knowing what to watch for matters.

Possible symptoms can include:
• Persistent bloating
• Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
• Needing to pass urine more often
• Increasing constipation
• Menstrual irregularities
• Ongoing fatigue
• Indigestion
• Lower abdominal or pelvic pain
• Pain during in*******se

These symptoms don’t automatically mean cancer — but if they are new, persistent, or worsening, it’s important to speak with your GP or gynaecologist. Early assessment is key.

Although most couples will have healthy children, some people unknowingly carry gene faults that can affect their child’s health and development.

Reproductive genetic carrier screening helps identify these gene faults, allowing individuals and couples to understand their risks before, or during pregnancy.

Even when there’s no family history, carriers are common — at least 1 in 20 women screened in Australia were found to carry a genetic condition. Conditions such as cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and fragile X syndrome can be diagnosed early, helping families make informed reproductive decisions.

Our team of specialist doctors and genetic counsellors provide a comprehensive approach to carrier screening, offering guidance, accurate risk assessment, and support throughout the process.

Genetic carrier screening is recommended for everyone who is pregnant or planning a pregnancy, giving you knowledge and clarity for the future.

Age affects fertility — but many people don’t realise an ultrasound can give important clues about what’s happening right now.

A fertility-focused ultrasound can help assess:
• Ovarian follicle count
• Ovarian structure and volume
• Uterine health
• Signs that may influence conception

It’s not a crystal ball — but it is a practical, evidence-based way to better understand your reproductive health and guide next steps earlier.

If you’re planning a pregnancy or just want clarity, a targeted ultrasound assessment can be a valuable starting point.

Amniocentesis is a diagnostic test that collects a small sample of amniotic fluid to check your baby’s cells for genetic or chromosomal conditions. It’s usually offered when there’s a higher-than-normal chance of conditions like Down syndrome, based on results from nuchal screening or blood tests, such as the non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT). Other reasons people may consider amniocentesis include: age, family history, or ultrasound findings.

Performed after 15 weeks, the procedure uses ultrasound guidance to safely insert a thin needle and withdraw a tiny amount of fluid—without touching your baby.

Our team at Ultrasound Care works closely with you to determine if this test is right for your pregnancy.

Ultrasound Care turns 21

Ultrasound Care began way back in 1996, in a single borrowed consulting room at the RPA Medical Centre in Newtown.

Dr Philippa Ramsay was an obstetrician/gynaecologist who sub-specialised in ultrasound. She had worked in other private ultrasound practices and as the first female O&G Ultrasound specialist in Sydney, she could see how it could be done better, with more understanding of the women's needs.

She was well supported by her colleagues who wanted their patients treated with sensitivity and care. She became busier and was soon joined by highly skilled sonographers and specialists who had a similar ethos.

The sonographers Mary McPhail and Rowena Gibson are still at Ultrasound Care 20 years later!!
