Congratulations to Dr Samantha Pillay on being named a 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
This honour recognizes her 40-year connection with the University and her dedication to improving patient quality of life, both through her surgical practice here in Adelaide and her global educational resources. A well-deserved achievement.

Next year will mark 40 years since I walked through the University of Adelaide gates.

Back then, I was searching for answers on microfiche in the Barr Smith Library. I never imagined that today, alongside my work as a surgeon, I would be using Artificial Intelligence to create films, music, and digital twin avatars.

Last night, receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award from The University of Adelaide was a powerful moment of reflection.

I am grateful that my journey has expanded my impact. As a surgeon, I impact people's lives one-by-one. But through the Inspirational Careers for Kids picture books and , I impact people globally.

Why books? To challenge gender stereotypes and build self-belief in the early years. Why film? To give voice to stories that wouldn't normally be available to cinematic storytelling.

Cinema is no longer just entertainment; it is a vital tool for education and empathy.

Thank you to Chancellor, The Honourable Catherine Branson; Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Hรธj; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jessica Gallagher, Liz Hawkins, Jan-Maree Wauer, the judges and awards team. my family, my team, and the University of Adelaide for supporting this journey of lifelong learning.

This marks the second year weโ€™ve reached finalist status in both categories (2023 and 2025), and Iโ€™m deeply grateful for the ongoing recognition of the work we do across health, education, and gender equity.

From delivering surgical care and GP education to creating AI-driven social impact films through aifilm4good and publishing childrenโ€™s books that challenge gender stereotypes, this recognition reflects a mission-driven business that operates at the intersection of innovation and impact.

Awards like these provide more than visibility; they amplify important conversations. About prevention over intervention. About designing scalable, sustainable health solutions. And about planting the seeds of self-belief in the next generation of women leaders.

Thank you to Telstra and the judges for this continued honour. We now wait to find out the South Australian winners. Wish us luck!

๐ŸŽฌ An Incontinent Truth โ€“ A Cinematic Wake-Up Call for World Continence Week ๐ŸŒ
June 16โ€“22

What if a film about urinary incontinence won an Oscar?
Thatโ€™s the provocative question behind An Incontinent Truthโ€”a groundbreaking AI-powered short film blending red carpet glamour with hard-hitting reality.

๐Ÿ’ก Told as a film within a film, it opens on an imagined Oscars night, cutting to intimate, composite stories of real people living with incontinenceโ€”brought to life with emotional AI-generated performances.

๐ŸŽž๏ธ Inspired by An Inconvenient Truthโ€”Al Goreโ€™s landmark documentary that pushed climate change into the global conversationโ€”this film aims to do the same for bladder health, a taboo affecting 1 in 4 adults.

๐Ÿค– By using AI, weโ€™ve:

Protected anonymity for sensitive patient stories

Created cinematic production without Hollywood budgets

Overcome traditional barriers to tell stories too often silenced by shame and stigma

๐Ÿ† AWARDS & RECOGNITION
๐Ÿฅ‡ Best AI Documentary โ€“ AI Film Awards, Paris 2025

๐Ÿ’ง World Continence Week | 16โ€“22 June ๐Ÿ’ง

23 years ago, I set out to create a centre of excellence focused on the management of urinary incontinence โ€” a space where patients and health professionals could access practical, reliable, and educational resources. At the time, there was very little accessible information in this space, and it was clear that the stigma surrounding incontinence was holding people back from seeking help.

So, I built Continence Matters โ€” a website designed to empower patients and equip health professionals. Over the years, the site has grown far beyond what I imagined. Today, it offers:
๐Ÿ“„ Free downloadable information sheets
๐ŸŽฅ Short educational videos on common bladder conditions
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ Clinical support tools and learning materials for health professionals
๐Ÿง  Evidence-based case studies and guidance for education

Last year, the website received over 74,000 visits, with people from around the world accessing the content 24 hours a day.

As we mark World Continence Week, Iโ€™m proud to have contributed to improving education and awareness about urinary incontinence โ€” a condition that affects 1 in 4 adults but is still too often misunderstood and untreated.

Letโ€™s keep working to break the stigma, improve access to care, and ensure continence care is part of the health conversation โ€” every week of the year.

๐ŸŽ‰An Incontinent Truth has received an Honorable Mention for the โ€œBest Titleโ€ category at the Monza Film Festival in Italy! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ†

This marks yet another accolade for our AI-powered short film addressing the stigma of urinary incontinenceโ€”a condition affecting millions, yet too often left in silence. We hope An Incontinent Truth [https://www.aifilm4good.com/an-incontinent-truth] will end the stigma around urinary incontinenceโ€”a condition affecting 1 in 4 adults, raising awareness the way An Inconvenient Truth ignited climate change awareness

๐ŸŽฅ AIFilm4Good is harnessing storytelling at scaleโ€”with global reach, like Paris, USA, and Dubai.
๐ŸŽถ And with a nod to Live Aid, our film features the original single "Break the Silence"โ€”a call to action for health equity and awareness.

Thank you to the Monza Film Festival for recognizing our mission to create social impact through storytelling. And thank you to everyone supporting aifilm4goodโ€”proving that even the most underrepresented issues deserve a global stage. ๐ŸŒ

Together, weโ€™re breaking boundaries, ending silence, and rewriting the future through AI storytelling for good.
