Your baby isn’t broken because he likes to beheld more than he likes to be put down
It’s physiologically normal that your body that has grown him is his preferred space
That closeness helps both of you .
Understanding some small changes to your feeding and routine can help you both get the rest you need

Fortunately in Australia our paediatricians & most GPs were aware that crying it out for babies was not helpful and caused unnecessary distress for babies and parents .

Babies need comfort not control

They need to know they can relay on a caregiver attending to meet their physical and emotional needs

Parents need support to follow what their gut is telling them - to respond to their baby before he becomes too distressed

Denmark just took a major step.

They are moving to end the “cry it out” method after a nationwide review and more than 700 psychologists raised concerns about potential risks to brain development and attachment.

Let that sink in.

Over 700 psychologists.

The study looked at what happens when babies are left to cry for extended periods. Researchers linked prolonged crying without response to elevated stress hormones and possible long term impacts on brain development and emotional bonding.

And honestly?

None of this surprises me.

We have known for years that babies are not manipulating. They are not testing you. They are not trying to control the house at 2 AM.

They are signaling.

A baby’s nervous system is immature. Their stress response system is still developing. When they cry, cortisol rises. When they are comforted, their system regulates.

That regulation is not weakness. That is brain wiring.

Responsive caregiving helps build secure attachment. Secure attachment supports emotional regulation, resilience, and cognitive growth long term.

This is not about shaming parents who have used certain methods. Many parents were told it was the gold standard. Many were exhausted and doing their best with the information they had.

But we are allowed to grow when the science grows.

Denmark’s decision reflects something bigger: a shift toward understanding early childhood through a neurological and psychological lens, not just a sleep schedule lens.

Sleep matters. Parents matter. But so does how a baby’s developing brain processes stress.

There are gentle, responsive sleep strategies that do not require ignoring distress. There are ways to support sleep without compromising connection.

And at the end of the day, babies are not meant to self soothe in isolation.

They learn to regulate by being regulated.

That is biology. That is attachment. That is development.

We are not creating dependence. We are creating security.

And secure children eventually become independent adults.

If you responded to your baby at 2 AM even when you were exhausted…

You were not creating a bad habit.

You were wiring a brain.

It’s official - having a midwife involved in your care is a big step in reducing the risk of medical interventions !

Why ?

Because midwives come from a stance of normal unless proven otherwise -

We inform you about your options

We give you evidence based information about the pros and cons / risk and benefits of all interventions

We know that birth has a huge impact on a mothers mental health for the rest of her life

We know and will tell you why , birth and the interventions during birth will impact your baby’s health for the rest of his or her life !

Birth is just one day BUT the way we birth matters for every mum/ every baby AND our health system

This is not to say we don’t support mothers choices - we do - but we also respect and advocate for informed choice .

When midwives are by women's side through pregnancy and birth, health outcomes improve & women are happier with their care. They are more likely to have:

👩🏻 Positive birth experiences
💕 More natural births
✂️ Fewer medical interventions

To improve the health of mums & babies, WHO urges countries to invest in lifesaving midwifery models of care.

To those of us in the maternity arena - we know the difference but for the general public is may not be obvious

Home birth is often a safe option for women and their families and typically involves the care of a midwife ( private or public) who has developed a relationship with the family and is familiar with any health issues

Women are often more relaxed in their own environment and feel a sense of autonomy often not felt on a hospital system

Free birth is usually not attended by a midwife and therefore a qualified practitioner is not on hand to detect and act if things do deviate from normal .

While freebirths and planned homebirths both happen outside of a medical setting, they are different birthing experiences.

Experts say creating awareness around how the two differ is important in helping women make informed and safe decisions.
