Can Yoga Keep You Safe❓

Yoga Asanas and Functional Movement: Enhancing Natural Movement Patterns for Lifelong Health 💪💃🍏

Functional movement patterns refer to the natural and fundamental actions humans perform daily, such as squatting, lunging, bending, pushing, pulling, and rotating. These movements are essential for maintaining strength, flexibility, and coordination, contributing directly to physical health and overall well-being.

However, when these movements are performed incorrectly – or when strength and mobility are lacking – pain, dysfunction, and injury can follow. Here, yoga asana plays a crucial corrective role: it improves mobility and flexibility, strengthens underused muscles, corrects imbalances, and fosters body awareness, helping the body move more efficiently and safely.

👉For example the strength and flexibility required to squat underlies many daily activities, from sitting to lifting. A deep yoga squat practiced regularly will help improve stability, posture and balance, all critical factors for long-term mobility, especially with aging.

👉Lunging patterns play a crucial role in movements like stepping forward, climbing stairs, and rising from the ground. Yoga postures such as Crescent Moon, Low Lunge and the Warrior poses effectively target the hip flexors, quadriceps and hamstrings which are key muscles essential for these actions. Strengthening these areas can enhance mobility, refine walking and running mechanics, and help prevent common lower-body injuries.

👉Flexibility underpins functional movement, allowing joints to move freely and muscles to work efficiently. Downward-facing dog stretches the calves, hamstrings and spine, supporting daily actions like bending and reaching. Lunges stretch our hip flexors and hamstrings, which can counter the effects of prolonged sitting and reduce back pain. Rotation in poses like seated spinal twist protect the spine and support us in turning, lifting and reaching.

This is just scratching the surface, but it will hopefully offer you inspiration to continue (or start!) your yoga asana practice and support your body’s well-being. 🧡

We have 9 morning and evening classes to choose from, affordable prices, supportive teachers and a friendly and welcoming space.

We hope to see you in studio soon! 🙏

Changing our attitude and perspective can change our life!✨

Is the cup half full or half empty? ☕

We can cause ourselves much mental agitation, distress and misery by feeling ungrateful or by expecting things to be a certain way (and being disappointed when they turn out differently).

The Vedic and yoga system teaches the concept of humility and gratitude. With the spiritual quality of humility, we feel appreciation and gratitude for what we have, and therefore feel more peaceful. 🌿

Instead of having the attitude of, “What can I get out of life?”, we can have the attitude of “What can I contribute to the well-being of others?”

This disposition will bring about a more fulfilling life.

Take a moment to reflect on something you have been feeling ungrateful for, and then consider how you could have an attitude shift in a positive direction. 🌸

We all need protection…

Each of us will come to a point in our life where we cannot protect ourselves, we don’t have the power or strength to do so, and we need help, we need somewhere to turn for real shelter and protection.

Today is an auspicious day in the yoga / Vedic calendar, known as Govardhan Puja. One of the most important meanings of today is understanding that the Supreme Person, the Original Cause, who is known as Krishna, is the person who can give us all protection. He is saying, just take shelter in Him.

Krishna is fully capable of lifting the burdens, fears, feelings of purposelessness and anxiety. He can lift all the burdens that we experience and that we feel on your shoulders, on our heart. Krishna is always ready to lift this and give us protection.

And how to we take shelter in the Supreme? Through His transcendental names (the mantras we chant) and through heartfelt prayer. Meditate, hear and sing the sacred sounds and find real protection and security.

What does it mean to chant from your heart?

If you have attended our kirtan or yoga asana sessions, you might have heard us say, “chant from your heart.” But have you ever stopped to think what that really means?

The first step is to listen to the mantra attentively. Listening is the active attempt to focus your attention. Instead of letting the mind wander, gently bring it to the sound of the mantra. You are hearing the melody, the tempo, and most importantly, the sacred sound. These transcendental mantras are endowed with unlimited spiritual potency, beyond the comprehension of our material mind.

So I welcome you to open your ears, take the mantras in through your ears and your mind, into your heart. The ear is like a funnel for sound vibration. Allow the mantras to pour through the funnel and enter your heart.

And when we chant, we are not singing because we have a good voice or to impress someone. We don’t want it to be mechanical. We want to try and chant these names of the Supreme Person—our eternal friend and well-wisher—in a mood of humility, surrender and love. We meditate on the sound as we sing, and let all our temporary worries and concerns float away, and rest in the reservoir of spiritual love and comfort.

Join us every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday for beautiful kirtan meditation.

I made this dessert for our last Sunday night kirtan meditation supper and it was a taste sensation which everyone loved.
Easy to make and great to have the video to make sure I had the right texture.

I highly recommend trying it out as having some homemade, fresh, rich and satisfying treats in the fridge that are made with love beats store bought anytime!

I didn’t have any maca powder or chocolate chips and I used carob powder instead of cocoa powder and they were still amazing. Omitting the chocolate and cocoa and using carob instead makes them more harmoniums with a yoga lifestyle. 🙏
