What should you be eating for breakfast?⁣

A balanced healthy breakfast should include a good mix of protein, fats and some carbs. Majority of people aren’t eating enough protein at breakfast. ⁣

Having a protein rich breakfast ensures a balanced, stable blood sugar level, makes you feel fuller for longer, sustains energy levels and prevents those afternoon sugar binges. ⁣

Commercial cereals such a Weet-bix, Rice Bubbles, Cornflakes or All bran etc do not contain enough protein or fats and are heavily processed.⁣

Good breakfast options include:⁣

〰️ Eggs with spinach leaves, tomatoes and avocado on sourdough toast.⁣

〰️ Protein smoothie with a handful of berries, handful of spinach leaves, 1 tbsp of nut butter, 1 tbsp of yoghurt, protein and milk of your choice.⁣

〰️ Granola or muesli with yoghurt and berries.⁣

〰️ Protein pancakes with yoghurt and fruit.⁣

〰️ Overnight oats or Bircher muesli with nuts, seeds, served with yoghurt and berries.⁣

Do you constantly feel exhausted?⁣⁣⁣⁣
Do you experience frequent headaches, anxiety, heavy periods, shortness of breath or cold hands and feet?⁣⁣⁣⁣
You could be suffering from low Iron. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Causes for low Iron include:⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Not eating adequate amounts of Iron rich foods e.g red meat, green leafy veggies, nuts, seeds, legumes. Vegetarians and vegans are at a higher risk.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Exercise - especially athletes as there is an increase in demand for Iron.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Heavy periods due to excessive blood loss. You shouldn’t be losing more than 80ml of blood when menstruating.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Poor gut absorption or digestive issues/bleeds e.g. gastric bleeding, ulcers, Inflammatory Bowel Disease.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Pregnancy or breastfeeding due to the increase in demand for Iron.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Always get a full Iron studies blood test with your naturopath or GP before supplementation.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
In regards to supplementation, I recommend an Iron bisglycinate as it is gentle on the digestive system, doesn’t cause constipation and is well absorbed.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Research shows that taking Iron capsules every second day helps with improving the absorption due to the binding effects of hepcidin in the blood.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Do you take Iron and how does it make you feel?⁣⁣⁣⁣

Studies have shown shown that we are more likely to be magnesium deficient in summer. ⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
As we tend to sweat more, be more active and drink more alcohol on balmy nights, this very important electrolyte is quickly diminished.⁣⁣⁣⁣
How do you know if your deficient in magnesium?⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Signs of magnesium deficiency include:⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Sugar cravings⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Headaches or migraines⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Muscle cramps and twitches ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Difficulty sleeping⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Poor energy or fatigue ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Feeling Stressed or anxious ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Low mood⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Poor recovery after training or exercise ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ PMS related symptoms ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
〰️ Period pain⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
It’s a key essential for maintaining good health and well-being.⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
It’s my favourite calming and relaxing go to.⁣⁣⁣

One of the best (and overlooked) therapies for improving our health. Rest.⁣

Rest is crucial for repairing our adrenals, hormones, energy, immune system and mental wellbeing.⁣

With the pandemic forcing everyone to take a step back and slow down, I’ve found this period as a golden opportunity to utilise this down time to rejuvenate both mind and body (hooray for sleep ins 🙌).⁣

The pandemic has changed us. But it’s not all bad.⁣

We are now focusing on the simple important things in life. Getting back to basics.⁣
Like daily exercise, baking or cooking at home, family time, getting in nature, gardening, painting, working from home (if possible) and putting less pressure on ourself.⁣

What positive habits have you created as a result of the pandemic? ⁣
And the question is what healthy habits are you going to maintain in the the post pandemic world?⁣
