The importance of tongue posture for facial development and airways ✨PART 2✨
So what is the correlation between jaw growth and nasal breathing?
👃🏽The roof of the mouth is the floor of the nose. So if the hard palate does not expand forward, it stays high and/ or vaulted like a dome in the mouth.
👃🏾A high palate then encroaches on floor of the nose, reducing space and potentially causing the nasal septum to deviate.
👃🏼With less space in the nose, breathing becomes more laborious, leading to mouth breathing. The nasal passage then becomes more and more congested and sometimes could even become infected. The stagnation of mucous within the warm passages form a breeding ground for bacteria.
👃🏻Sinusitis, rhinitis, middle ear infection and post-nasal drip will become all too common occurrences. It is not an allergic reaction but a functional shift that results in compensation.
