Fact or Fiction. Kids Will Just Grow Out of It.

Fiction.
While some growth related conditions improve with time, ignoring pain can lead to longer recovery and time away from sport.

Fact.
Early physiotherapy can help manage symptoms, maintain strength, and guide safe participation.

Fact.
Complete rest is rarely the full solution. Most children benefit from modified activity rather than stopping everything.

If your child is limping, avoiding sport, or complaining of pain that is not settling, it is worth getting professional advice.

Strong, confident kids stay active for life.

5 Simple Tips to Prevent Back to Sport Injuries

1. Gradually increase training load
Avoid jumping from zero activity to multiple full sessions per week.
2. Prioritise sleep
Growing bodies need adequate recovery time.
3. Strength matters
Bodyweight strength exercises help protect joints during growth spurts.
4. Check footwear
Worn out or poorly fitted shoes can increase heel and knee pain.
5. Do not ignore persistent pain

Pain that lasts more than two weeks deserves assessment.

Most childhood sports injuries are load related. Managing load well is key.

Is your child sore after returning to sport, or is it something more?

Many parents struggle to tell the difference between normal muscle soreness and a developing injury. Knowing the signs can prevent long term problems and reduce time away from sport.

We have written a practical guide covering:
• How to spot normal soreness
• Red flags for injury
• Why rest alone is rarely enough
• How to safely return to sport after time off

Over the past few weeks, we have seen a clear pattern.

Children returning to sport are presenting with:
• Heel pain during soccer and netball
• Knee pain with running and jumping
• Ankle sprains in the first few games back
• Back and neck pain after long school days

One of the most common diagnoses we see this time of year is Sever's disease, a growth related cause of heel pain. Another is Osgood-Schlatter disease, which causes pain just below the kneecap.

The good news is that most of these conditions are manageable with the right advice, load modification, and strengthening.

Early assessment makes recovery smoother and helps kids stay active.

Back to School and Sport. Why Does Pain Show Up Now?

When kids return to school and sport, we often see a spike in pain and injuries.
This week we are talking about why that happens.

After holidays or time off, children go from low activity and flexible routines to structured school days and regular training. Their bodies suddenly face more running, jumping, sitting, carrying bags, and repetitive movement.

Common problems we will cover this week include:
• Heel pain such as Sever's disease
• Knee pain such as Osgood-Schlatter disease
• Ankle sprains
• Back and neck pain from school demands
• Fatigue and reduced coordination

If your child has recently started complaining of pain, you are not alone. Follow along this week to learn what is normal, what is not, and when to seek help.

Fiction: People with Multiple sclerosis should avoid physical activity to prevent fatigue.
Fact: Appropriate and well planned exercise is one of the most effective ways to manage MS symptoms. Physiotherapy guided exercise can improve endurance, reduce stiffness, and support safer, more efficient movement over time.

Fatigue and spasticity in MS often worsen when movements are rushed or inefficient. When the nervous system is already working harder, hurrying or pushing through tasks can increase muscle tightness and drain energy more quickly.

Focus on slow, controlled movements and pace your day with planned breaks. Do not wait until you are completely exhausted. Short, regular rest periods help regulate muscle tone and conserve energy.

Gentle stretching, targeted strengthening, and balance exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist can improve mobility without overloading the system.

Pacing is not giving up. It is a strategy. Small changes in how you move and rest can make a meaningful difference.

When someone living with Multiple Sclerosis comes through our doors, we start with listening.

MS affects everyone differently, so our first priority is understanding how it impacts your everyday life — not just your diagnosis. We take time to assess fatigue levels, muscle stiffness, balance, and walking ability, while also learning about your personal goals, routines, and challenges.

From there, we design a fully individualized physiotherapy plan focused on:
• Safe, supported movement
• Reducing muscle tightness and
• Improving balance and walking confidence
• Building strength for real-life daily activities

Our aim is to help you move with greater confidence, conserve energy, and feel more in control of your body — both inside and outside the clinic. Because physiotherapy for MS isn’t one-size-fits-all; it’s about supporting your life, your way.

This week our focus is on Multiple sclerosis and how physiotherapy can support the management of fatigue, spasticity, and mobility challenges.

MS affects everyone differently, but targeted movement strategies can make daily activities more manageable.

Throughout the week we will share insights into how physiotherapy helps conserve energy, improve movement quality, and support independence at every stage of MS.

You need to be injured to see a physiotherapist.

Fiction.

Physiotherapy is just as valuable for injury prevention, performance support, and managing small niggles before they become bigger problems. Everyday athletes benefit from proactive care just as much as professionals.

Small habits make a big difference when it comes to staying active and pain free. A few simple examples.

** Before sport, do a brief warm up that includes light jogging, joint mobility, and movements that mimic your game

** After training, focus on recovery with gentle stretching, hydration, and a good night of sleep

** During the week, add two short strength sessions focusing on hips, knees, ankles, and core

If something feels off for more than a few sessions, get it checked early rather than pushing through.

Physiotherapy works best when it supports what you do every day, not just when something goes wrong.
