Our final Grand Rounds session for 2025 wrapped up with an insightful presentation from our Immunology team, exploring the use of plastics, past, present and future.

The discussion covered the science behind plastics, their environmental impact, and the broader public and personal health implications. The team also shared practical steps we can take, both in the laboratory and in our daily lives, to reduce plastic use and support sustainability.

A big thank you to our speakers, Dr Karl Baumgart (Director of Immunology) and Dr Abigail Vallejo (Immunology Registrar), for an informative and thought-provoking session.

We also extend our sincere thanks to Clinical Assoc Prof Marina Berbic (Deputy Director, Genetics) for facilitating this session and for her leadership and support throughout all Grand Rounds events this year.

Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology (DHM) is committed to providing safe, evidence-based care for expectant parents. From November 2025, midwives can order Fetal Rhesus (RhD) Screening using MBS item 73420.

The test is non-invasive and uses a small blood sample from the mother, usually collected between 11 and 29 weeks' gestation. It looks for fetal RHD gene sequences circulating in the mother's blood, helping predict whether the baby is likely to be RhD positive.

This information allows clinicians to target anti-D immunoglobulin treatment only when needed, supporting more personalised care for RhD-negative patients.

A Medicare rebate is available for this test, which may cover all or part of the cost. Concession card holders will continue to be bulk billed. Learn more about the test and referral requirements:

Dr Jim Newcombe, CEO of Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology (DHM), has been appointed as the next Managing Director and CEO of Sonic Healthcare, effective 20 November 2025.

This transition follows the retirement of Dr Colin Goldschmidt, Sonic Healthcare’s CEO for 32 years, at the 2025 Annual General Meeting. Dr Goldschmidt has led Sonic’s transformation from a single Sydney laboratory into the third largest pathology provider in the world, embedding the culture of Medical Leadership that defines us today. Reflecting on his time at DHM, Dr Newcombe states:

“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to work at Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology, serving our referring doctors and communities. Our Medical Leadership Culture creates a powerful shared purpose: to look after millions of patients per year, one by one, with the dedication, quality and care we would provide to our own family members.”

We are also delighted to announce that Dr Melanie Galea has been appointed as the new CEO of DHM. Dr Galea is a Genetic Pathologist and highly accomplished medical leader. She joined DHM as a Pathologist in 2018 and was appointed Director of Genetics in 2020. During this time, she has led a multidisciplinary team of pathologists, scientists and operations experts to position DHM at the forefront of genetic diagnosis and screening in Australia. Her work has helped shape a modern, collaborative model of diagnostic medicine that continues to strengthen DHM’s reputation for excellence and innovation.

Dr Galea is a longstanding member of the RCPA Genetics Advisory Committee, an RCPA Examiner in Genetic Pathology and has previously been a member of both the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) and Evaluation Sub-Committee of MSAC; roles that highlight her commitment to quality, education and the advancement of pathology.

This new appointment marks an exciting new chapter for DHM. Dr Galea states;

In this new role, I look forward to working closely with our referring clinicians, together with the senior management team, pathologists, expert leaders and talented staff across our practice. Together, we will continue to build on our proud history while shaping a dynamic and successful future, caring for the community that we serve with highest-quality diagnostic medicine.

Today we recognise the men in our lives and the positive contributions they make to society, family, and community. Men's health often takes a backseat, with 50 Australian men dying each day from preventable causes before they reach the age of 75.

The theme for International Men’s Day 2025 is “Supporting Men and Boys”. As we celebrate the men and boys who make a difference in our lives, let’s also remind them that we’re here to support them in every way.

This week is Cervical Cancer Awareness Week.

The theme for 2025 is “The Power of Choice”, and it’s a reminder that everyone should have options when it comes to their health.

The Cervical Screening Test ( ) for detecting human papillomavirus ( ) can be done in two ways:
• Clinician collected sample
• Self-collected swab

Self-collected HPV testing is designed to increase accessibility and equity, making it easier for more people to participate in screening.

The National Screening Program is focused on the elimination of cervical cancer. To achieve this, we need to be inclusive, and that’s where self-collected testing can make a real impact.

By promoting CST, including self-collected testing, we support elimination, equity, and accessibility.
