Why Supporting Others Means So Much to Me
Before I became a Bowen Therapist, my sister experienced a stroke that left her with loss of sensation in her right side.
Her recovery journey involved multiple therapies, all working to rebuild her strength, balance, confidence, and communication. It was a slow and emotional process, as stroke recovery often is.
When I later trained in Bowen Therapy, I had the opportunity to work with her. After a couple of sessions, she began noticing changes and over time, she regained most of the sensation in her right side.
While Bowen was just one part of her recovery journey, being able to support her in that moment was incredibly special and reinforced my belief in the body’s ability to respond to gentle, supportive care.
While everyone’s story and outcomes are different, I believe it’s important to have multiple therapies working together to provide holistic care and achieve the best possible results.
Experiences like ths is why I do what I do, to support people on their path to healing, in whatever way their body needs.

Understanding your nervous system (and why calm matters)

Your body has an automatic control system called the autonomic nervous system. It works quietly in the background, regulating things like heart rate, breathing, digestion, and stress responses without you having to think about it.
It has two main branches:

Sympathetic nervous system
This is your fight-or-flight mode.
It increases alertness and heart rate and prepares the body to respond to stress.

Parasympathetic nervous system
This is your rest-and-digest mode.
It supports relaxation, recovery, healing, digestion, and repair.
Both systems are essential and work together to maintain balance (homeostasis). When stress pushes the body into overdrive, the parasympathetic system helps bring things back to calm.
A key player here is the vagus nerve, which helps slow the heart, support breathing, and improve digestion all signs the body feels safe again.
Gentle approaches, slow breathing, mindfulness, and therapies that work with the nervous system help support this balance allowing the body to reset rather than stay stuck in stress mode.

Why Bowen Therapy is gentle and why that matters

In Bowen Therapy, we’re taught to work slowly and lightly and there’s a very real science behind it.
When a Bowen move is applied, it sends information through the sensory nerves to the brain. The brain processes that information and sends a response back to the body so it can adjust and rebalance.
This is also why we pause between moves to allow the body to respond without interference.

Here’s the key part:
Nerve signals work on an “all-or-nothing” principle. This means more pressure does not create a faster or better response. Pushing harder doesn’t speed up healing it just increases stimulation.
Too much pressure can actually trigger a fight-or-flight response, which is the opposite of what we want. Bowen Therapy aims to calm the nervous system, moving the body into rest-and-repair mode, where real healing happens.
Gentle input → clear communication → better results.

Pain rarely starts where you feel it.
That’s why Bowen Therapy looks at the body as a whole, supporting muscles, fascia, joints, and the nervous system to work together again.
This image shows just some of the areas Bowen Therapy may help support.
If you’ve been managing pain rather than resolving it, booking a Bowen Therapy appointment may just be the answer.

It can assist with:
• Back, neck & shoulder pain
• Headaches & jaw tension (TMJ)
• Sciatica & hip discomfort
• Frozen shoulder & repetitive strain
• Knee, ankle & foot pain
• Postural imbalances & general muscle tension

New clients tell me they’re surprised by how subtle Bowen feels and even more surprised by how much change they notice afterwards.
