First in the Southern Hemisphere 🥇
Last Friday, a Southern Hemisphere-first robotic-assisted surgery was successfully performed at the San by Associate Professor Stephen Pillinger. The surgery saw the use of the new da Vinci 5 surgical system, recently introduced to Australia by Device Technologies.
The technology represents a significant advancement, offering 10,000 times more power than previous versions, improved ergonomics for surgeons, greater precision and reduced surgery times for patients. It also has telepresence and telesurgery capabilities, creating new opportunities for mentoring and education beyond the San.
At the San, we’re incredibly fortunate to have experts like A/Prof Pillinger. In 2025, he was part of the team that completed over 1,000 robotic surgeries, placing us in a strong position to embrace and lead this next upgrade.
The San is continuing A/Prof Pillinger’s momentum with Professor Tristan Yan, Director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, performing the Southern Hemisphere’s first heart surgery using the da Vinci 5 this week.
We’re proud to be at the forefront of innovation, helping shape the future of robotic surgery.
