Even with a busy week of major announcements and launches behind us, the Easter Bunny still made time to hop through the hospital, spreading joy to both staff and patients 🐰

A big thank you to our wonderful San Volunteer team for guiding the Easter Bunny on this special visit each year 💙

First in the Southern Hemisphere 🥇

Last Friday, a Southern Hemisphere-first robotic-assisted surgery was successfully performed at the San by Associate Professor Stephen Pillinger. The surgery saw the use of the new da Vinci 5 surgical system, recently introduced to Australia by Device Technologies.

The technology represents a significant advancement, offering 10,000 times more power than previous versions, improved ergonomics for surgeons, greater precision and reduced surgery times for patients. It also has telepresence and telesurgery capabilities, creating new opportunities for mentoring and education beyond the San.

At the San, we’re incredibly fortunate to have experts like A/Prof Pillinger. In 2025, he was part of the team that completed over 1,000 robotic surgeries, placing us in a strong position to embrace and lead this next upgrade.

The San is continuing A/Prof Pillinger’s momentum with Professor Tristan Yan, Director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, performing the Southern Hemisphere’s first heart surgery using the da Vinci 5 this week.

We’re proud to be at the forefront of innovation, helping shape the future of robotic surgery.

1st in Australia, 2nd in the World 🥇🥈

Last night, we officially launched the Interventional Neuroradiology Theatre, only the second of its kind in the world.

This state-of-the-art hybrid theatre will transform care for Australians experiencing strokes, aneurysms and other life-threatening neurological conditions, enabling faster access to critical, life-saving treatment.

By allowing patients to be diagnosed and treated in the same theatre, it removes the need for transfers and empowers clinicians to act quickly when every second counts.

The theatre was officially opened by the Member for Wahroonga, Alister Henskens SC MP, and blessed by Chaplain Kym Cross, marking a significant milestone in positioning the San as a leading centre of excellence in neurosurgery and stroke care in Australia.

Thornleigh Sports Club Community Day ⚾️🏀🏏⚽️🏐🥎

As proud major sponsors, it was so special to be part of such a fun-filled day. San Bear was busy making new friends, posing for plenty of photos and handing out stickers to some very excited little fans.

We loved being part of the action and wish Thornleigh Sports Club a great year ahead!

2026 will mark the 75th anniversary of Carols at the San! 🎄

Originally known as “Carols by Candlelight,” the event began in 1951 and was pioneered by Arthur Lyndon (Lyn) Knight, who served as the program’s coordinator and conductor of the choirs and orchestras.

Over the years, it has grown into the community tradition we know and love today.

In the lead-up to December, we’ll be sharing moments from Carols through the years, starting with these photos from 2005. Do you remember the first year you attended? Let us know in the comments 👇

An inspiring evening of conversation ahead of International Women’s Day 💜

The event brought together female specialists, GPs, medical students and healthcare leaders to connect, share insights and reflect on their journeys in healthcare.

This year’s theme was “Balance the Scales,” and we heard from Dr Jingyi Cao, Dr Catherine MacManus and Dr Jennifer Posen, who are each at different stages of their careers. They shared their perspectives on the changes they’ve seen in healthcare, both in patient care and in the growing representation of women across medical specialties.

Thank you to Dr Nicole Phillips for chairing the event!

Check out our new G-Arm in action!

Last month, we became the first hospital in New South Wales and the second nationally to implement the new advanced G-Arm technology.

Compared to the previous system, the G-Arm has a smaller footprint, is easier to position and significantly improves the workflow in theatre. With the support of radiographers, the G-Arm provides high-quality, real-time 3D visualisation during surgery, enhancing surgical accuracy and supporting safer, more precise procedures.

We are honoured to be the first private hospital in Australia to receive an Angels Award from the World Stroke Organisation, achieving gold status for stroke care 🏆

Today our team took part in a live simulation of a stroke patient, demonstrating how quickly, safely and effectively we treat patients experiencing stroke — where every minute matters.

This achievement wouldn't be possible without the skill, dedication and collaboration from all of our stroke team, led by Dr Kong Chung and our brilliant stroke CNC Krista 💙
