Once again, our community is faced with disaster, and my heart goes out to all of those who have been hit hard by bushfires. I also hold deep gratitude to those on the ground working tirelessly to fight these fires and keep our communities safe.
When disaster hits it can bring up different feeling for everyone. It is ok to feel intense emotions at times like this. It is a normal response to highly stressful and life-threatening circumstances. For some it may not be the first time they are experiencing such traumatic situations in their life. This may mean that it brings up distressing memories of similar threatening situations. It may also exacerbate existing mental health and emotional challenges. This is also normal.
If you are experiencing difficult emotions and distress, it is helpful to share what you are going through with others who can provide emotional support. Talking about what is going can help. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength not weakness. It’s not easy to do when you are trying to be strong and survive but can help in the long run.
If you have children who have experienced traumatic experiences, it is important to show them that it is ok to feel what they are feeling and validate their experience. Tey will look to you for guidance on how to respond to frightening situations. If you need support to help your children in the aftermath of a frightening situation, please reach out.
It is also common for family and domestic violence to increase in the aftermath of natural disasters. If you are feeling unsafe it is important to reach out for help, you are not alone.
I have experience supporting people through natural disasters, crisis and trauma. If you need a professional to hold this space for you using evidence based and compassionate skills, I am available for immediate support face to face in Numurkah and online via telehealth.
Please don’t do this on your own, reach out to family, friends and professionals.
