We’re looking for a passionate Education Assistant to join our team and support deaf and hard-of-hearing students at Trinity.

In this role, you’ll model high-quality Auslan, strengthen communication in the classroom, and help students grow in confidence, independence and language skills. Working as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, you will assist teachers of the deaf, contribute to classroom learning programs, and provide targeted support where communication or language needs arise.

You will also help create a safe, nurturing environment that promotes wellbeing, connection, and a positive sense of identity for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Bruce Drabsch's daughter Melinda Dagger, who was travelling to hospital to be with her ailing father, was phoned by a doctor and asked to inform her mother her husband of more than six decades had died, because no Auslan interpreter was provided.

This quote is so powerful. There really is no reason for medical professionals to prioritize the hope of one particular language over the need for language accessibility.

Full citation: Hecht, J. L. (2020). Responsibility in the current epidemic of language deprivation (1990-present). Maternal and Child Health Journal, 24(11), 1319-1322.

Image description: "In the past, language deprivation in deaf children was primarily caused by the late age of diagnosis, which was on average 2.5 years. Today, however, it’s commonly due to a medical model that “prioritizes hope for the eventual acquisition of spoken language over the immediate need for exposure to accessible language” (Hecht, 2020, p. 3).
