February is Neurodiversity Awareness Month

We believe that every brain works differently - and that difference is something to recognise, understand, and celebrate.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing a range of content to help raise awareness about neurodiversity, along with stories from people with lived experience who are generously sharing their perspectives and journeys.

We invite you to follow along, learn more, and be part of creating a more inclusive and understanding community.

📅 Accessible Events | February 2026

There’s no shortage of things happening locally this February, with plenty of accessible events popping up as we gear up for mad-March.

We’ve pulled together a selection of upcoming accessible events happening across our community throughout February 2026. While these events aren’t run by My Ability Pathway, they’ve been promoted as accessible and may offer great opportunities for connection, inclusion and enjoyment.

As always, we recommend checking event details directly with organisers to ensure the accessibility features meet your individual needs.

Know of another local accessible event coming up? Let us know - we'd love to share it with our community 🧡

What does “Reasonable & Necessary” mean in your NDIS plan?

This part of the NDIS Act (Section 34) decides what supports can be funded - and it’s something many participants find confusing.

For a support to be funded, NDIS must be satisfied that it:
• Is related to your disability
• Helps you work towards your goals
• Supports everyday life and participation
• Is value for money
• Is effective and based on good practice
• Isn’t something families, carers or the community can reasonably provide
• Is an NDIS-funded support

📌 If your plan doesn’t include what you believe it should, you can request an internal review within 3 months.

We know the language is complex and plans can be tricky to navigate. If your plan feels confusing or doesn’t reflect your needs, our Support Coordinator may be able to help.

💙 You don’t have to figure it out alone.

📂 NDIS Plan Review Checklist

A simple guide to help you feel prepared and confident.

An NDIS plan review is a chance to make sure your supports reflect your life right now. Whether it’s your first review or not, a little preparation can make a big difference.

Here’s a simple checklist to guide you through the process:

✔️ Understand your current plan
Take time to reflect on what’s been working, what hasn’t, and what matters most to you now.

✔️ Gather information
Collect reports or letters from therapists, doctors, or your Support Coordinator that show how your disability impacts daily life and what supports work best.

✔️ Reflect on your goals
Think about the goals you’ve achieved, what’s still in progress, and whether there are new goals you’d like to include.

✔️ Identify changes in your life
Changes in health, living arrangements, work, study, or family and carer supports are important to share.

✔️ Decide on support needs
Consider what supports have helped, where more support is needed, and what new supports could make life easier.

✔️ Meet with the planner or NDIA representative
Bring your notes and reports and talk through your priorities so your voice is clearly heard.

✔️ Review the outcome
Once completed (usually within 4-8 weeks), your updated plan will outline your goals, supports, and funding.*

💬 Remember: You don’t have to do this alone.

Understanding the NDIS plan review helps friends, family, carers, and the wider community provide meaningful support. At My Ability Pathway, we walk alongside people to ensure their plans truly reflect their goals, abilities, and everyday lives.

*Please know that there is no guarantee that an internal review will change anything on your plan.

🚨 NDIS Plan Changes – What You Need to Know

Confused about your next NDIS plan review? Here’s the simplified version:
🔹 Stronger Safeguards: Higher penalties for serious breaches, unregistered service delivery, and false info.
🔹 New Commission Powers: Faster info requests, anti-promotion & banning orders, and quicker court processes.
🔹 Participant Updates: 90-day cooling-off period if leaving NDIS & easier plan variations without full reassessment.
🔹 Streamlined Claims: NDIA to accept electronic claims for smoother processing.

At My Ability Pathway, we help you understand what’s new and how it affects your plan - so you can focus on what matters most. 💙

🌟 Stories of Impact: Meet Shaun! 🌟

Meet Shaun, a vibrant and cheerful 37-year-old, whose determination and sunny outlook have guided him on his journey towards independence. After moving back in with his mum Coral, Shaun hasn’t let anything slow him down - he’s focused on his goal of living in his own home with Supported Independent Living (SIL) supports.

Through weekly Short-Term Accommodation (STA) stays, Shaun develops and maintains essential life skills: setting up his space, cooking, shopping, and enjoying activities from swimming to concerts. With the love of his dog Casper and the support of his NDIS team, Shaun is building confidence, learning decision-making, and discovering joy in everyday achievements.

Coral says the best part about Shaun’s path to independence is “seeing my son living his best life, knowing he’s safe and happy.”

Shaun’s journey shows that growth, skill-building, and determination can transform lives. His path towards independence is inspiring - and with his cheerful spirit, nothing can stop him from achieving his goals in 2026 and beyond. 💛

✨ Happy New Year from My Ability Pathway! ✨

A message from Barbara Lightburn - Director, My Ability Pathway

2025 tested us - and it strengthened us.

It demanded responsibility.
Decisions that mattered.
Conversations that required clarity, not comfort.

And it delivered something even better:
trust in what we’ve built - because we did the work properly.

This year held MAP.

The steady, often invisible work of care.
Standards. Accountability. Intention.
Leadership as a practice - not a position.

It held refinement too.
Not the glamorous kind.
The foundational kind.

Stronger systems.
Clearer direction.
Better structure.
So people aren’t carrying what systems should.

2025 wasn’t neat.
It wasn’t quiet.
And it certainly wasn’t easy.

But it was deliberate.
And it was powerful.

I’m stepping into 2026 energised.
Clear in my vision.
Excited for what’s now possible.

Because 2026 is a year to look forward to with optimism.
It’s the year MAP grows - not through pressure, but through precision.
Our systems are stronger, smarter, and ready to do the heavy lifting.

Yes, we wonder what’s next.
And we are ready for it.

Hello, 2026.

As the year draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on 2025. At MAP, it’s been a year of challenges, achievements, and meaningful growth - each one shaping who we are and how we support our community.

Thank you for being part of our journey. Seeing our values of connection, care, and inclusion reflected in the people we work alongside has made this year truly special. Your support means everything to us, and we’re grateful today and always.

As the holiday season arrives, we wish you a time filled with whatever you need most - whether that’s celebration, rest, connection, or quiet moments.

We’re looking ahead to 2026 with optimism and excitement and can’t wait to continue the journey together.
