Is this how your IBS diagnosis appointment went 🤔 -

Doctor: "You have IBS."
You: "What's causing it?"
Doctor: "Stress. Try low-FODMAP. Here's a prescription."
You: leaves more confused than when you arrived

I've been there. That "diagnosis" explained absolutely nothing about why my gut was destroying my life.

Here's what changed everything: understanding the difference between symptom management (conventional) and root cause investigation (functional medicine).

Case Study 1: Emma 39 - IBS-D Journey

Conventional Medicine Route (2 years):

IBS affects 1 in 5 Australians, but here's what doctors don't tell you: it's not a diagnosis, it's a description of symptoms. Real healing starts when you stop managing symptoms and start investigating root causes. Learn the honest difference between conventional and functional approaches to IBS.

Even healthy foods can cause gut symptoms such as bloating and pain. It doesn’t mean the foods are bad it just means that your gut is in need of some support.

Why are you bloated by lunchtime every single day?

If you're in your 40s or 50s and dealing with constant bloating, here's what's really going on:
Your hormones are changing how your digestive system functions. As your estrogen levels drop during perimenopause and menopause, several things happen:

➡️ Your gut bacteria composition shifts
➡️ Your stomach acid decreases by 25-30%
➡️ Food moves more slowly through your digestive system
➡️ Foods you've eaten for years suddenly cause problems

Research shows that 40-60% of women experience new digestive symptoms during this life stage. You're not imagining it, and it's definitely not "just part of getting older."

The frustrating part?
Generic advice keeps failing because every woman's gut is unique. The probiotic that helped your friend might make YOUR bloating worse. The elimination diet that worked for someone else might remove foods your gut actually needs.

I've just published my most comprehensive blog post on bloating after 40.
Inside, you'll discover:
✴️ The specific hormonal changes causing your bloating
✴️ Why everything you've tried hasn't worked
✴️ 2 helpful tips you can implement TODAY
✴️ Why personalised testing is the key to lasting relief
✴️ How to stop guessing and start healing

Plus, I share clinical insights from working with hundreds of women dealing with this exact issue - including my own experience healing severe bloating during perimenopause.

And if you're ready to stop guessing and get real answers about YOUR gut, consultations are available via Telehealth Australia-wide or in person at my Barossa Valley clinic.

You don't have to live with constant bloating. Let's figure out what your body needs.

What a weekend! 🌟
I had the privilege of sharing my passion for gut health at two incredible events, and I'm still buzzing from the experience.

Saturday took me to the SA Rural Women's Gathering Association, where I explored the fascinating gut-mental health connection with an inspiring group of rural women. The sense of community and support in that room was truly special. This day ended with a Gala Dinner at the Vine Inn, Nuriootpa which showcased how a group of women can have so much fun dancing, singing and spending time with one another.

Sunday brought a powerful High Tea Fundraiser hosted by pituitary tumor survivor Rachael McCracken, where I connected the dots between gut health and hormone balance for people navigating pituitary conditions. Hearing their stories reminded me exactly why I do this work.

I'll be honest—public speaking doesn't come naturally to me. But when you're surrounded by genuinely curious people who are ready to take charge of their health, the nerves fade away. There's something magical about those "aha!" moments when simple, practical gut health strategies suddenly make everything click.

If you're curious about how your gut health might be impacting your mood, hormones, or overall wellbeing, I'm always here to chat. Sometimes one small shift is all it takes to start feeling better.

Immunity and you gut health go hand in hand. If you are suffering frequent infections, allergies or generally feel run down, then maybe it is time for some investigation into you gut health.

💩 Constipation is showing up as a bigger issue than people realise

It’s not just about being “a bit blocked up.”
😩You feel heavy, sluggish, and bloated.
😩Your jeans feel tight no matter what you eat.
😩Your skin gets dull, itchy, or breakout-prone.
😩Your energy crashes, your brain feels foggy, and your feel grumpy.

What’s normal?
😁 1–3 easy, complete bowel movements a day.
😁No straining, no pain, no “still not finished” feeling.
😁Stools should be smooth, well-formed, and easy to pass.

When your body can’t clear waste properly — everything feels harder.

Gut health starts with regular, complete elimination.

Don’t ignore it — your bowels might just be the missing link.
