Structural Integration-Remedial Massage-Long-Term Results-O'Connor/Fremantle Area Hello there,

I'm Lewis, a Remedial Massage Therapist and I specialise in Anatomy Trains Structural Integration. I help treat postural and movement patterns and restore overall body awareness and connection, this helps people feel and move at their best. Structural Integration (SI) is like Remedial Massage in that is

is a form of bodywork but the treatment approach and techniques are very different. SI treats posture, movement restrictions, chronic pain and general aches and pain with very specific soft-tissue techniques. Assessments focus on posture, gait (how you walk) and specific movements, this helps identify any areas that may be restricted, compressed or affecting your overall function. Sessions involve your participation, moving along with a technique, this can help move out of old movement patterns and into new ones! Clients often report lasting relief, feeling taller, lighter and more ease in their body after their session. I have been been practicing bodywork since 2018. I became a bodyworker after experiencing life-long relief from chronic lower back pain through SI. After my experience I knew that I wanted to specialise in SI so I could help people find relief, just as I did. I'm very passionate about helping people with chronic pain, old persistent injuries, everyday aches and pains, as well as pain post surgery (6 months or more). One of the problems I find with clients who have chronic pain is that they continually receive treatment on the area of pain again and again, this has merit, especially in the more acute phase of treatment but it's important to remember the body is a connected system. Sometimes the source of pain may actually be very far away from the site of pain. SI is great in these cases as it looks at the whole person. Surgery is another, often the body has to compensate while an area is recovering. For some, these compensations remain after they have recovered and they experience alternated movement, pain at the surgery site or far away from the site. SI is hugely beneficial for those post surgery (generally after 6 months) as it may help restore movement and posture or provide long-term relief. I believe that everyone should experience relief from pain, movement restrictions and poor postural patterns. Can you feel where your spine stops moving?

Moving slowly, one part at a time, you start to notice where things flow…and where they don’t.

For me, the lower back is where it feels most restricted.

Bringing awareness to that is often where change begins.

This is something I often show clients in sessions.

Working through the sides of the back, where the body connects from the lower back into the shoulder, can make a noticeable difference.

It’s an area many people overlook.

Small, simple things like this can help support what we do in the clinic.

This is part of working with the body as a whole

Rather than just focusing on where something feels tight, we’re looking at how different areas are relating to each other - including the connection from the lower back up into the shoulders.

When that relationship improves, movement often feels easier and your body as a whole feels more supported.

Connecting your lower back to your shoulders

One thing that can play a role in lower back discomfort is how it connects through to the shoulders.

There’s a large muscle that links that whole area together, so tension above can influence how the lower back feels.

When we start to balance that out in Remedial Massage, the lower back often doesn’t have to work as hard and things feel more a lot more comfortable.

This is something we all experience from time to time.

Upper back tension doesn’t just appear suddenly, It builds up through how we move and what we do each day.

Taking a moment to reset, even briefly, can make a difference.

Just for a moment—bring your attention to your lower back.

Is it tight? Restricted? Holding more tension than you realised?

This is something that can build quietly over time…

Remedial massage can give your body a chance to relax and release tension, making everyday movement feel a lot easier.

One thing I noticed last week with lower back pain

It was rarely just the lower back!

Most of my client’s tension and restriction was actually in their hips, and this was affecting how their back was moving.

Once I addressed those surrounding areas, it actually took a lot pressure off their lower back.

Ever noticed your jaw shifting, clicking, or even locking when you open your mouth?

This is something I see often — and it can feel frustrating when something as simple as opening your mouth doesn’t feel smooth or natural.

What many people don’t realise is that jaw issues aren’t just about pain — they’re often about how the jaw moves and tracks.

Small shifts in alignment can limit movement and create strain through the joint and surrounding tissues.

In this before-and-after, the image on the left shows a jaw that shifts to the right with limited opening. On the right, you can start to see a more neutral tracking pattern relative to the client's anatomy and improved range of movement after hands-on structural bodywork.

In a session, I assess the position of the jaw, how it relates to the surrounding anatomy, and how it moves — then work directly with the tissues to help restore more efficient function.
If your jaw doesn’t feel quite right, there’s usually a reason — and more importantly, something that can be done about it.
