☀️ Summer 2025–26 Alert: Protecting Older People from Heat Stress ☀️
With rising temperatures, summer brings a much higher risk of heat-related illness for older people. For aged care providers, carers and support workers, now is the time to prepare and take steps to prevent heat stress before it becomes dangerous.
🔥 Heat is Australia’s deadliest natural hazard
Each year, heat causes more deaths than any other natural hazard. During heatwaves, the toll can reach into the hundreds.
👵👴 People over 65 are at highest risk
Older people’s bodies don’t respond to sudden stress as efficiently as younger people’s. For example, their skin doesn’t sweat and cool the body as effectively. Because of this, heat-related illness can worsen very quickly, leading to rapid health decline — and even death.
🚨 Early signs of heat-related illness to watch for:
Sudden rise in body temperature
Confusion or altered mental state
Seizures
Nausea or vomiting
Loss of consciousness
Weak, rapid pulse
If you notice any of these symptoms in an older person, it is a medical emergency.
👉 Begin first aid immediately to cool them down
👉 Call emergency services without delay
Let’s work together to stay alert, stay prepared, and keep aged Australians safe this summer. 💛☀️
