A week of reflections 🌹
10 years ago I bought a one way ticket to Chile, the land of my maternal lineage. Two days after my landing in my grandmothers home, I experienced the life changing moment that set the course of the next 10 years. Whilst reading an article on Parteras, the traditional South American midwives- a surge of life force filled me so completely with the strongest message I have ever received- that is what I am going to be. I didn’t understand what a Partera was, I knew extremely little of midwifery. But I knew that this calling was too strong to ignore. I told my grandmother that evening what I had experienced, she had tears in her eyes when she replied, telling me that her mother was the community midwife. It was my great grandmothers dream that my grandmother would follow in her footsteps, no one did.
I had no idea what this world of birth and midwifery was that I was about to enter. I bought a copy of Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May and then it began ✨
The following three years led me to travel South America, seeking indigenous midwives, apprenticing and learning from Parteras in the Equadorian Amazon jungle, training as a doula in equador. Apprenticing with a traditional midwife in Cusco Peru, studying and undergoing the rituals, rites of passage and challenges of midwifery in the Brazilean tradition. I learnt to sit in sweatlodge, sing for fertility, cleanse with herbs, appreciate the power of ritual and prayer in birth.
The second chapter of midwifery led me back to Australia to study the bachelor in midwifery (That’s a whole story in itself!).
I graduated in 2022 and the following year had me taking a position as a rural remote MGP Midwife in Mount Isa, North West QLD.
Another deep dive into honing new skills and knowledge, an epic, challenging and profound experience.
I met the love of my life in that remote middle of nowhere town and we soon conceived.
2025 I entered my own birthing portal, bringing my daughter to the world- maybe one day I will share the story of that experience. What I know is that birth changed me as a woman yes, made me into a fierce mother I am proud to be, and even more profoundly, as a midwife.
