Community access isn’t just about going out. It’s about feeling included, safe and supported. Feeling in control of your day. 🧡

At Southern Light Respite, we support participants to connect with their community in ways that feel right for them. That might mean a quiet walk, a trip to the shops, or joining something social like our monthly SLR Social Club.

Every outing is planned around your preferences, interests and energy levels. Feeling confident and supported makes all the difference.

Want to build your community access goals in a fun, relaxed setting?
Start with our next SLR Social Club event.

Looking for something more regular and aligned with your goals?
Reach out to our friendly team on 0480 739 063.

We’re here to help you build confidence, connection and community. One step at a time.

Today we celebrate & support Physical Disability Awareness Day, a national initiative by Physical Disability Australia. 🫱🏼🫲🏽

It’s a day to recognise the contributions of people living with physical disability, and to raise awareness of the many conditions that fall under this community.

At Southern Light Respite, we stand with our participants, carers and families.

We support inclusion, recognition and real visibility every day. 🧡

It’s Okay to Feel What You Feel 🫶

You don’t have to be positive all the time.
Feeling lost or overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
It means you're navigating life, with all its ups and downs.

At Southern Light Respite, we understand that support isn’t just about practical help. It’s about making space for all the parts of you, even the ones that feel messy, tired or uncertain.

You’re not behind.
You’re not failing.
You’re not alone.
You’re supported.

You’re doing your best, and that’s enough. 🧡

Community Access with Southern Light Respite 👥

Community Access through the NDIS helps participants get involved in social, recreational and everyday activities that build confidence, skills and connection.

At Southern Light Respite, our support workers provide one-on-one support so participants can:

- take part in local events and activities
- work towards independence and social goals
- build confidence in everyday community settings

This support is funded under your NDIS plan’s Social and Community Participation budget. It can include things like outings, appointments, grocery shopping, visiting favourite places or learning new routines.

Every activity is tailored to your goals, preferences and pace, with the right support beside you. 🧡

🤔 What’s the difference between the NDIS and the NDIA?

It’s a common point of confusion when you’re starting out with NDIS supports.

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is the government-funded program that provides support for eligible people with disability across Australia. It includes funding for things like support workers, therapy, respite, and equipment.

The NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency) is the organisation that runs the NDIS. It’s responsible for assessing eligibility, approving plans, and managing how the scheme operates.

Understanding the difference helps you:
✅ Know who to contact for what
✅ Feel more confident asking questions or raising concerns
✅ Navigate the system without getting overwhelmed

Knowing the difference between the NDIS and the NDIA can help you access support more smoothly — and get the most out of your plan.

🎮 More than playing games 🎮
Gaming is a way to connect, regulate and feel at home.

At Southern Light Respite, we know gaming isn’t just for fun. For many neurodivergent people, it’s a powerful tool for calming, focusing and expressing themselves.

That’s why our space includes a PlayStation 5, a large screen TV, and the time and support to enjoy gaming in a safe and respectful environment.

Whether it's downtime after an outing, a way to connect with others, or simply part of a regular routine, gaming can be a meaningful part of a person’s day.

At SLR, we create spaces where kids, teens and adults feel comfortable being themselves. And yes, that includes time to game. 🧡

Let your support worker know what works for you 🫶

Support should work for you. Always.

Our support workers are here to listen, not to take over.
We want to know what helps you feel calm, what does not work, and how you would like things done.

Your voice matters.
At Southern Light Respite, we respect your choices, your comfort, and the way you want to be supported.

That is how we personalise every stay with care, compassion and your needs at the centre. 🧡

It’s the little things that make a big difference 🧸🛏️

At Southern Light Respite, we personalise every stay to feel familiar, calm and safe. That includes the bedding, comfort items and room setup.

For some participants, that might mean their favourite dolls. For others, it’s quiet lighting, a certain scent, or space to bring familiar routines.

Respite should never feel clinical.
It should feel like your space, made just for you.

That’s the heart of person-centred support. And it’s what we’re here to provide every day.
