At Southern Light Respite, community is not just something we talk about. It is something we build together. 🫶

Shayne and Jamie have been part of SLR since the very beginning. From staying with us at respite to becoming founding members of our SLR Social Club, their presence, encouragement and willingness to be involved have helped shape the inclusive and supportive environment we are proud of today.

They remind us that community grows through connection, participation and showing up for one another.

On behalf of everyone at Southern Light Respite, thank you Shayne and Jamie. We are truly grateful to have you as part of our SLR family. 🧡

Care should never come with guilt attached. 🤝

Too many people living with disability have been made to feel like their needs are “too much” or inconvenient to others. That is not something we accept.

Needing support does not make you less.
It means you deserve the right people beside you.

Happiness really can be this simple. 🫶

A moment outside.
Time spent with friends.
Someone beside you who genuinely cares.

At Southern Light Respite, we see every day how the little things matter most.
Feeling safe. Feeling supported. Having the right people around you to enjoy the moment with. 🧡

Real support is not about doing more. It is about creating space for choice, connection and the everyday moments that make life meaningful.

Because when you are supported in the right way, happiness does not have to be complicated. 😊

“What’s that lanyard for?” Here’s your answer:

When someone wears a Sunflower lanyard, it’s a quiet signal that they have a non-visible disability, one that is not immediately apparent to others.

It means they may need more time, more patience, or a little extra help, and wearing the Sunflower helps them feel confident they’ll be met with understanding.

Seen it before? Now you know. Pass it on.

🦁 The SLR Social Club does Hobart Zoo & Aquarium 🐠

This Social Club was a special one. We took a trip out to Richmond, spent time with the animals and celebrated our SLR Co-founder Tiffany’s birthday 🎂🧡
A fun afternoon had by all, with plenty of cute animal pics captured.

Look at them all 😊📸🙌
The Southern Light Respite Social Club is all about connection.
It’s a friendly, inclusive space where we come together, enjoy local activities and build genuine relationships.

Follow us for our monthly Social Club updates. We hope to see you at one of our events!

❓ DID YOU KNOW - Your NDIS funding is designed to support many aspects of daily life?❓

Under Core Supports, funding for Assistance with Daily Living and Community Access helps participants manage everyday tasks, build independence, and stay connected to their community.

This could include support with:
• Grocery shopping and appointments 🛒
• Getting out into your community 🛝
• Attending social activities and hobbies 🚵
• Meal preparation and household tasks 🍳

Whether your goal is building confidence, strengthening daily living skills, or increasing independence, your supports should reflect what matters most to you.

At Southern Light Respite, we provide support with:
• Community Access
• In-Home Support
• Personal Care

We work with you to understand your goals, respect your choices, and provide compassionate support that builds independence and feels right for you. 🧡

The Most Important Support Starts With You 🫶

This is your reminder to care for yourself.
Choose yourself.
Prioritise yourself.
Accept yourself.

At Southern Light Respite, we believe real support empowers you to take the lead in your own life.
You deserve care. From others, and from yourself. 🧡

♾️Recognising Strength in Neurodiversity 🧩

Today we celebrate & support International Asperger’s Day, a time to recognise and celebrate the strengths, talents and perspectives of people with Asperger’s.

While the term now sits within the broader Autism Spectrum, many still identify with the name and the unique experiences it represents.

People with Asperger’s often bring focus, creativity, and deep attention to detail. They may also face challenges with change, sensory processing and social connection.

At Southern Light Respite, we honour neurodivergence as something to understand and respect. Inclusion means creating space for people to be supported as they are.

Today is about visibility, understanding and real acceptance. 🧡

🐉 At Southern Light Respite, we support what matters to each participant. That includes their interests, creativity, and the things that bring them joy 🎲

That might be learning how to play Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) or dressing up in cosplay.

Whatever their interests, we make space for participants to feel comfortable being themselves and trying new things.

Often, especially with our neurodivergent participants, we find that they teach us just as much as we support them. Their passion, focus, and knowledge often turn into moments where we’re learning alongside them.

Because at SLR, support isn’t about changing who someone is. It’s about celebrating individual interests and strengths, and having fun together in a way that feels safe, respectful, and genuinely inclusive. 🧡

🤔 What’s the difference between Community Access and Social Participation?

It’s a common question when navigating your NDIS supports.

Community Access is support that helps you get out into your local area for everyday things — like shopping, appointments, or going to the bank. It’s about staying connected to your community and managing daily life with confidence.

Social Participation is support to help you join in recreational or social activities — like art groups, sports, events, or spending time with friends. It’s focused on building confidence, relationships and having fun in a supported way.

Understanding the difference helps you:
✅ Choose supports that match your goals and interests
✅ Make the most of your Core funding
✅ Stay connected both practically and socially

Knowing how Community Access and Social Participation work together can help you get the most out of your NDIS plan.

🗣️ Are you listening…
Yes, of course.

Sorry, what? Did you ask me something? 😆

At SLR, we understand that listening and focus can be challenging for neurodivergent minds. We’re patient, supportive, and always happy to repeat ourselves… at least a few times 😉
