A day to start conversations that matter.
A day to listen, reflect and take action.

We’re proud to be part of the disability community, and to keep building spaces where people feel safe, respected and supported 🧡

Every story shared helps create a more inclusive Australia.
Let’s keep the conversation going.

As November wraps up, we’re pausing to recognise that rest is part of progress.

For participants. For carers. For support workers.
Rest is not a reward. It’s how we keep going.

Time to pause.
Space to reset.
Permission to soften.

🪧 FACT: You have the right to choose who supports you.
This means you can change providers at any time.

Under the NDIS, you have the right to exercise choice and control.

That means:
✔️ You can choose who delivers your supports
✔️ You don’t have to stay with a provider if it’s not the right fit
✔️ You can use more than one provider for different supports

If something doesn’t feel right for you anymore, you don’t have to stay.
You are allowed to ask questions.
You are allowed to change providers.
You are allowed to expect better.

At Southern Light Respite, we support your choices.
Your plan. Your goals. Your call.

Thinking you might need a new Short-Term Respite (STR) provider?

❓~ DID YOU KNOW? ~❓
At Southern Light Respite, every Short Term Respite stay is personalised, built around your preferences, routines and goals.

It’s not just accommodation or about a change of scenery.
Short-Term Respite (STR) is a valuable support that helps build long-term outcomes, supporting both the participant and their carer.

✅ Strengthens participant independence
✅ Supports carer wellbeing
✅ Sustains informal support networks
✅ Creates space for personal growth and skill-building

Short Term Respite should feel purposeful.
It’s here to help you recharge, reset and keep moving forward 🧡

🤔 What’s the difference between informal supports and paid supports?

It’s a common question when navigating your NDIS plan.

Informal supports are the unpaid help you receive from family, friends or your community, and they play a big role in your day-to-day life.

Paid supports are funded through your NDIS plan and delivered by support workers or providers like SLR. This includes things like respite care, daily living support and community access.

Understanding the difference helps you:
✅ Guide how your NDIS plan is set up and funded
✅ Ensures paid supports complement your informal network
✅ Helps everyone involved know their role and avoid burnout

Understanding the difference between your supports helps you navigate your NDIS funding more confidently and use it in the way that works best for you.

Navigating NDIS changes is hard. 😣

Here are our top tips for participants navigating the change from Short Term Accommodation (STA) to Short Term Respite (STR):

✅ It’s not just a name change
The shift moves focus from accommodation as a place to respite as a support.

✅ Check your Core Supports budget
STR can often be accessed under Core Supports, even if STA isn’t listed.

✅ Know what’s included
Daily care, meals, and a short, safe break. It’s not a holiday.

✅ Know who it’s for
STR supports participants with informal carers who need time to recharge.

✅ Be clear on your support needs
The NDIS will assess if STR helps maintain your wellbeing, safety and usual care arrangements.

Need support navigating these changes?
At Southern Light Respite, we provide registered NDIS short term respite (STR) services in Hobart, Tasmania. Whether you’re already using respite or exploring it for the first time, we’re here to help you understand your options and access the support that’s right for you.
