Neurodiversity describes the idea that all people experience and interact with the world in different ways - in how we think, move, process information, and communicate.

Neurodiversity refers to the diversity of all people. It is often used in the context of neurodivergence.

Someone who is neurodivergent behaves, thinks and learns differently from what is considered typical.

Neurodivergence includes thinking styles such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Tourette syndrome, Autism, ADHD and more. Neurodiversity and neurodivergence are nonmedical terms.

Around 15% of Australians are neurodivergent, so it’s important to not just recognise neurodivergence, but also understand people's unique strengths and challenges.

Some of these challenges arise from existing environments and systems that may not be designed to cater for how some people think or perceive the world.

Also, many different traits and abilities can be associated with neurodivergence, such as exceptional creativity, pattern recognition, and problem-solving abilities. It is important to celebrate and support people whose brains work in different ways.

Neurodiversity Celebration Week (16-20 March 2026) recognises the strengths of different minds.

🤔 What’s the difference between Short-Term Respite (STR) and Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

It’s a common question when exploring your NDIS housing and support options.

Short-Term Respite (STR) is a short stay away from home, with support, meals and activities included. It’s designed to give you a break, try new things, or give carers time to rest.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is regular, ongoing support in your home — usually shared with others — to help you manage daily life and build independence over time.

Understanding the difference helps you:
✅ Choose the support that suits your lifestyle and goals
✅ Know what to ask for in your NDIS plan
✅ Make informed decisions about where and how you want to live

Getting clear on the difference between STR and SIL can help you use your NDIS funding in the way that works best for you.

At Southern Light Respite, community is not just something we talk about. It is something we build together. 🫶

Shayne and Jamie have been part of SLR since the very beginning. From staying with us at respite to becoming founding members of our SLR Social Club, their presence, encouragement and willingness to be involved have helped shape the inclusive and supportive environment we are proud of today.

They remind us that community grows through connection, participation and showing up for one another.

On behalf of everyone at Southern Light Respite, thank you Shayne and Jamie. We are truly grateful to have you as part of our SLR family. 🧡

Care should never come with guilt attached. 🤝

Too many people living with disability have been made to feel like their needs are “too much” or inconvenient to others. That is not something we accept.

Needing support does not make you less.
It means you deserve the right people beside you.

03/03/2026

Happiness really can be this simple. 🫶

A moment outside.
Time spent with friends.
Someone beside you who genuinely cares.

At Southern Light Respite, we see every day how the little things matter most.
Feeling safe. Feeling supported. Having the right people around you to enjoy the moment with. 🧡

Real support is not about doing more. It is about creating space for choice, connection and the everyday moments that make life meaningful.

Because when you are supported in the right way, happiness does not have to be complicated. 😊

“What’s that lanyard for?” Here’s your answer:

When someone wears a Sunflower lanyard, it’s a quiet signal that they have a non-visible disability, one that is not immediately apparent to others.

It means they may need more time, more patience, or a little extra help, and wearing the Sunflower helps them feel confident they’ll be met with understanding.

Seen it before? Now you know. Pass it on.

This Social Club was a special one. We took a trip out to Richmond, spent time with the animals and celebrated our SLR Co-founder Tiffany’s birthday 🎂🧡
A fun afternoon had by all, with plenty of cute animal pics captured.

Look at them all 😊📸🙌

It’s a friendly, inclusive space where we come together, enjoy local activities and build genuine relationships.
