Scott Wilson - Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist Scott Wilson is a Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist based in Orange, NSW. Scott is currently the Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist for Orange City Rugby Club.

Scott has been involved in both elite sport and with everyday people for over 20 years, as a Strength & Conditioning Coach, Exercise Physiologist and Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist. Young people and making sure they stay healthy and active is a particular passion for him. In 2019 he launched the Young Athlete Podcast - a show dedicated to helping parents and coaches of young athletes get access to some of the best information out there to look after your young athlete. Apart from being a practitioner, Scott has also coached young athletes at club, junior development and representative level - most recently he was coaching co-ordinator from 2017-2019 for the Leichhardt Cygnets Junior AFL Club. He is currently a final year Sports & Exercise Registrar on the Specialisation Training Program (2019-2021 cohort) through the Australian College of Physiotherapists. Scott will sit his final exams in November 2021. Specialisation as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists is conferred upon physiotherapists who have attained the highest level of expertise in their particular field of physiotherapy - in this case Sports & Exercise Physiotherapy. These physiotherapists have successfully completed a rigorous training and examination process. Scott's elite sport background covers a range of sports, in 2011 & 2102 he was the Rehabilitation Coordinator and one of the Sports Physiotherapists for the Adelaide Crows. Scott has worked with many teams and individuals including;

Scott has taught on undergraduate and post graduate courses for Sports & Exercise Physiotherapy, and Exercise and Sports Science. He currently teaches on the Master of Sports Medicine Program for the University of Melbourne.

Recognizing and managing a concussion promptly can significantly influence recovery. Here’s what needs to happen immediately following a suspected concussion:

🚩 Check for 'Red Flags':
If in doubt - sit them out!
Immediately after the injury, it's critical to identify any 'red flags'—serious symptoms that necessitate a swift trip to the hospital. If these are absent, the next step is crucial.

👩‍⚕️ Seek Professional Care:
Once serious immediate risks are ruled out, refer the athlete to a qualified health care practitioner for a thorough evaluation and guidance on the next steps.

⏳ Initial Rest Period:
The first 24-48 hours after a concussion should involve a short period of rest. This includes physical rest to help the body recover and cognitive rest to protect brain health.

🧩 Gradual Return to Activities:
After the initial rest, a carefully monitored, gradual return to sport and learning activities is essential. This process helps ensure the athlete's safety and supports optimal recovery.

🧠 How to Recognize Concussion: What You Need to Know 🧠

Concussion is a complex and evolving injury, often changing in severity over hours or days after an event. It can significantly impact balance and cognitive functions, with recovery times varying among individuals. Recognizing the signs early is crucial.

🔍 Using the Concussion Recognition Tool 6 (CRT6):
The CRT6 is essential for anyone on the field as it helps in the immediate recognition of concussion signs. Here are some symptoms to watch for:

Headache
Dizziness
Nausea or vomiting
Blurred vision
Sensitivity to light or noise
Balance problems
Difficulty concentrating or remembering
Feeling slowed down or “in a fog”

🚫 Immediate Action:
If any of these symptoms are observed after an injury, it's critical to remove the individual from play immediately. They should not return to any activity that day and must be seen by a healthcare practitioner as soon as possible.
