Many years of working in mental health and disability as a support worker for large companies, I came to understand that gaps in communication, organisation and follow through could easily be met better with personalised service.

After much research, including speaking with clients and their families, Care You Deserve was born with a passionate goal of providing the very best of home care and community and social engagement.

Our holistic approach to support is centred around fulfilling all requirements without delay.

I have been a disability and mental health support worker for 5 years.
I get asked quite a lot about what exactly l do in my line of work and it surprises me that not a lot of people really know.

Over the past two weeks Care You Deserve has supported our clients in a rage of services, including:

• Community Access - School pick ups, school drop offs, cinemas, cafe visits, afternoon walks, shopping and beach visits.

• Respite: Over-night shifts at the Royal Children’s hospital while family rest and attend work. Sleep overs at houses so that other family members can get a full nights sleep.

• Personal care: cooking, assisting clients with toileting, bathing, showing, getting dressed and eating.

• Capacity building: supporting the empowerment of our clients through detailed activities set out by clients, family and allied health professionals. Example, implementing strategies with dealing extreme anxiety and panic attacks while being out in the community.

• Domestic cleaning: general cleaning of the house, making it less stressful for families.

• Personal Training: taking clients to the gym and running them through there personalised program.

A goal of mine is to raise awareness about what support workers do in the mental health and disability industry. There are many families and support programs out there that need quality support workers.
If there is anyone reading this and is interested in getting qualified but doesn’t know where to start please don’t hesitate to contact me l will be more then happy to help out. We need more wonderful people in the industry who are invested in supporting those in need.

For 5 years I have been a health care worker.
I have seen, listened and learnt A LOT.
The one thing that has really stood out for me is the lack of professional support surrounding disability, mental health and aged care. Specifically when it comes to receiving support in the gym and in their hydrotherapy sessions.

A Physio or other health professional will provide a personalised program for their client.
Run through it with them once, then monthly or fortnightly follow ups will be implemented.
However this is only determined on the level of funding they have received for the year.
When the Physio is not there the rest of the time, we as carers are expected to guide them through their complex program. 🤯

Big corporate company’s will dump a high complex needs client into the hands of a carer with little, to no experience in the fitness industry, straight into the pool and/or gym. 🤨🤯

These company’s do not care about the quality of support their clients are receiving just as long as they’re getting their side of the pay cut, that is all that matters to them. This needs to change!!

Besides home care and community support, my long term vision I have for ‘Care you Deserve’ is to collaborate with physios and/or other spicelists to provide a service where mental health, age care and disability clients receive a quality service that they deserve. Every client deserves a carer with mandatory experience and qualifications in both the healthcare industry and the fitness industry.

This is something that I am incredibly passionate about and can’t wait to see where I can take this! Unfortunately this will be postponed due to COVID but I am over the moon that my vision is starting to become a reality 🤗
