Tinnitus Awareness Week starts with T is for talking about it.

🎶 Fiona Horne has lived with tinnitus since the 1990s—a condition that became part of her life during her years as a touring musician. As the lead singer of Def FX, she was constantly surrounded by high-decibel sound, from blaring stage monitors to loud club gigs, all without the hearing protection we now know is essential. Over time, that relentless exposure to noise took its toll, leaving her with a persistent ringing in her ears that she still navigates every day.
Reflecting on her experience, Fiona shares:
"I’ve lived with tinnitus since the 1990s, learning to navigate its challenges daily. Tinnitus Awareness Week is crucial in highlighting the profound impact tinnitus has on lives. I’ve redefined silence as a feeling rather than a sound, and I’m committed to supporting this campaign to bring more awareness and understanding to the condition."
Despite the challenges, Fiona has found ways to adapt, redefining silence and learning to manage tinnitus while continuing her creative pursuits. In her latest Instagram video, she opens up about her journey, and some time ago shared her story on 60 Minutes, helping to raise awareness about hearing health, prevention, and the realities of living with tinnitus.

What’s Changing at Casey Hearing?

This year, my focus is simple: making sure no one slips through the cracks.
I am committed to improving efficiencies to reduce double handling and admin overload.
This will mean creating more touchpoints with existing clients, staying connected to how you’re doing with your hearing heath, and addressing small preventable issues before they become bigger problems.

To support this, Casey Hearing will be moving to a new CRM (client management software). The transfer process runs from today (Thursday) until Monday. This means we can’t have client appointments on these days.

We thank our clients and their families for their patience during this transition.

If you’d like to book an appointment now for a couple weeks away, please feel free to use our current online booking system.

It’s Tinnitus Awareness Week.
That ringing. Buzzing. Hissing.
If it’s in your ears — and it won’t switch off — you’re not alone.

Tinnitus affects millions of Australians, and for many people it starts quietly… then becomes exhausting.

Tinnitus Awareness Week is about one thing:
👉 Understanding it
👉 Talking about it
👉 Knowing help exists

You don’t have to “just live with it.”

This Tinnitus Awareness Week (2-8 February)

Ever been to a club or gig, and felt your ears ‘ringing’ afterwards?

You may have experienced temporary tinnitus – where you hear sounds that are not present in the physical world. While tinnitus is temporary for some, it can persist for others. Overall, tinnitus is expected to affect two-thirds of Australians in their lifetime. Make sure to familiarise yourself with the condition and consider finding an audiologist for help.

I love working in event spaces!

They bring together everything I value most- connection, community, relationship-building, and opportunities for growth.

Something many people don’t realise is how much sound and acoustics matter — even in small rooms.

Recently, a guest speaker asked if we’d be using a microphone. She shared that she can project her voice to around 20 people, but for larger groups, she prefers a mic.

At Casey Hearing, our advice is always the same:
👉 Always use a microphone, no matter the room size.

Why?
Because not everyone hears the same way.
Because people with hearing concerns deserve to participate fully.
And because no speaker should have to strain their voice to be understood.
With a background in audiology and speech pathology, I also think about vocal health, room acoustics, soft furnishings, and the little details that make people feel comfortable and included.
When people can hear clearly and speakers can speak comfortably,
everyone feels more confident, connected, and engaged.

Have you ever been in a room where you wanted to join the conversation but couldn’t quite hear because of poor acoustics or
because people choose not to use microphones? 🎤

Hearing isn’t about turning the volume up.
It’s about understanding, staying connected, and keeping your brain engaged.

If you notice you can hear noise but miss words — especially in busy places — that’s often your first sign. Not something to ignore. Not something to “deal with later.” It’s your cue to act.

Taking steps early supports communication, confidence, and long-term brain health. Putting it off usually does the opposite.

🚫 Three common traps to avoid this year:

1️⃣ Waiting until it gets “worse”
Hearing loss creeps in quietly. Over time, the brain stops expecting certain sounds, which makes adjustment harder down the track. Earlier support simply works better.
2️⃣ Self-prescribing hearing solutions
No two hearing profiles are the same. Devices without proper testing, tuning, and follow-up often lead to frustration — and the false belief that hearing support doesn’t help.
3️⃣ Focusing on ears, not life
Hearing health impacts conversations, work, relationships, and confidence. If care doesn’t fit your real-world life, it’s incomplete.

In 2026, let’s move from managing quietly to living fully connected.

You’ll be hearing… but not understanding.
Especially in noise.
Especially in group conversations.
Especially when you’re tired.

Many people assume this is just “getting older” or something to push through.
It’s not — and ignoring it often leads to withdrawal, frustration, and fatigue.

✅ The solution
Don’t wait for hearing to become a problem before you act.

• Have your hearing checked early
• Monitor changes over time
• Address clarity, not just volume
• Get support that fits your life — work, family, social settings

Small, early adjustments can prevent bigger challenges later.

In 2026, let’s shift from coping to connecting 🤍

💡 One helpful thing to know about hearing health (and 3 mistakes to avoid in 2026)
One thing that really matters:
Hearing is not just about volume — it’s about clarity, connection, and brain health.

If you can hear but struggle to understand speech (especially in noise), that’s often your first sign that your hearing system needs support — not later, not “when it gets worse,” but now.

Early action protects communication, confidence, and cognitive wellbeing.
🚫 3 common mistakes to avoid this year:

1️⃣ Waiting until hearing loss feels “bad enough”
Many people delay help for years. The brain adapts to what it doesn’t hear — and that makes adjustment harder later. Earlier support = better outcomes.
2️⃣ Buying hearing devices without professional guidance
Not all hearing loss is the same. A device without proper assessment, fitting, and follow-up can lead to frustration, discomfort, and giving up altogether.
3️⃣ Focusing only on the ears, not the person
Hearing health is about relationships, work, confidence, and participation in life. If your care doesn’t consider how and where you live your life, it’s incomplete.

In 2026, let’s shift from coping to connecting.
Your hearing matters — and so do you 🤍

A behind the scenes at Casey Hearing
A real day in the life of our audiologist, Khatija back in December.

✨ A day in the life (real edition) ✨

🚗 Early start at Mazda
8am - Last employment hearing test of the year - done before tool exposure.
A good chat with the OHS manager about protecting hearing, not just testing it.

👋 Quick stop to see my daughter at work (she was called in for a shift, close to Mazda - mum moment 🫶)

🏃🏽‍♀️ Back to the clinic by 9:50am
Open my emails…
Finalist. Top 3.
Awards ceremony starts in 10 minutes.
“Have an acceptance speech ready.” 😳

🎧 While the awards play in the background
I’m unpacking and charging hearing aids for clients coming in the next day, because clinic life doesn’t pause.

🏆 Then my category is announced…
Gold winner — Migrant Leadership | Women Changing the World

🎤 Tried to give an acceptance speech but the technology didn’t work.
At that exact moment, Tracey walks in with a walk-in hearing aid repair.
Fixed it in-house.
Casually said, “I’ve just won a leadership award.”

☕ Celebrated with an iced coffee downstairs
Back upstairs 20 minutes later for:
• ear cleaning
• children’s hearing tests
• hearing aid programming
• reports to doctors

All in a day’s work.

Grateful to be a mum in business.
Honoured to be recognised as a change maker 🤍

☀️ Sun safety for your skin - don’t forget about your ears too. 👂
In Australia, we know the message well:
Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide.
But there’s one area that’s often forgotten… the pinna (the outer ear).
At Casey Hearing, we’ve supported clients who’ve had skin cancers removed from their ears. The ears are exposed, delicate, and frequently missed when applying sunscreen.
Here’s your sun safety reminder, with ears included:
👕 Slip on sun-protective clothing
🧴 Slop on SPF50+ sunscreen - don’t forget the tops and backs of your ears
👒 Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that actually covers your ears
🌳 Seek shade, especially when the UV index is 3 or higher
🕶 Slide on wraparound sunglasses to protect eyes and surrounding skin
💡 Tip: Apply sunscreen to clean, dry skin 20 minutes before heading outside, and reapply every two hours - especially after swimming or sweating.

Stay sun-safe. Stay protected.

Some of Khatija’s favourite sounds live near the water 🌊
Cascading waterfalls.
Quiet creeks.
The stillness of a river.
Waves rolling in and reminding you to breathe.

They’re the sounds that slow us down, ground us, and make us feel present.

What’s your favourite sound?
Birds at dawn? A grandchild’s laugh? The kettle clicking off?

If you’ve noticed some of those moments slipping by, that’s not something you have to just “cope with.”
At Casey Hearing, we’re here to help you reconnect — gently, at your pace, and without rushing.
