Memory Starts with Experience
Every memory begins as an experience: a sound, a smell, a conversation, a moment of joy or fear. These experiences activate sensory systems—vision, hearing, touch, taste, or smell—which send electrical signals racing through the brain.
At this stage, the information is fragile. If the brain did nothing further, the experience would fade almost instantly. What determines whether it sticks? Attention, emotion, repetition, and meaning all play major roles. The brain is selective—it doesn’t store everything, only what seems important.
