Should pets be allowed in Australian aged care homes? 🏡
New findings from Companion Animal Network Australia’s (CANA) 2025 Pet Friendly Aged Care Survey have revealed 96% of people believe residents should be allowed to have an animal companion, but only 18% of facilities in Australia allow them.
CEO of CANA, a national animal welfare charity and advocacy group, Trish Ennis told 891 ABC Radio Adelaide’s Nikolai Beilharz as Australia’s population ages, keeping people and pets together is essential to maintaining both physical and mental health.
“The emotional harm of being forced to give up a beloved animal is profound. Older Australians shouldn’t have to choose between care and companionship,” she said.
