Should pets be allowed in Australian aged care homes? 🏡

New findings from Companion Animal Network Australia’s (CANA) 2025 Pet Friendly Aged Care Survey have revealed 96% of people believe residents should be allowed to have an animal companion, but only 18% of facilities in Australia allow them.

CEO of CANA, a national animal welfare charity and advocacy group, Trish Ennis told 891 ABC Radio Adelaide’s Nikolai Beilharz as Australia’s population ages, keeping people and pets together is essential to maintaining both physical and mental health.

“The emotional harm of being forced to give up a beloved animal is profound. Older Australians shouldn’t have to choose between care and companionship,” she said.

I was left outside for years — through storms, through winters, through nights so quiet I could hear my own heart breaking. 💔
When the other dog hurt me, I didn’t even cry. I just closed my eyes and wished for it all to end.

Then one day… soft hands reached for me. They didn’t pull, or hit, or yell. They lifted me up and whispered, “You’re safe now, Bruno.”
They gave me a little toy shaped like my missing ear — and I carried it everywhere, like hope I could finally hold. 🧸

Now I sleep on warm blankets. Someone tells me I’m loved every night. For the first time, I’m not waiting to be rescued — I’m home. ❤️

📅 The strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards apply from 1 November 2025 as part of the new Aged Care Act 2024. The strengthened standards include an improved focus on food and nutrition.

Quality Standard 6: Food and nutrition highlights partnering with older people to find out what and how they like to eat and drink. It highlights the importance of:
▪️ understanding the needs and preferences of older people
▪️ offering a choice of nutritious meals and drinks to support both health and quality of life.

A food focus group is a great way to:
▪️ talk with your residents about the food and drinks you offer
▪️ get their feedback
▪️ make improvements to the menu and dining experience.

We’ve created a toolkit to help providers in setting up a food focus group. The toolkit includes materials that can be adapted to suit the needs of the service.

It includes:
🍏 practical information on establishing a food focus group
🥣 resources including a fact sheet, feedback form and meeting templates
☕ real-life examples from within the sector.
