Bec Assembly! 📺
The Assembly is an ABC tv series in which Leigh Sales, one of Australia's most respected interviewers, mentors autistic journalism students as they engage with some of the country's most well-known public figures!
Our very own support worker, Bec, had the opportunity to be part of the show! 🌟
Bec was inspired to join The Assembly in memory of her late father, who worked as a postie by day and a journalist by night, writing for the Sunday Times. He passed away 3 years ago, and him as an inspiration drove Bec to see what career opportunities could come from participating in the Assembly! She wanted to show people she was serious about journalism! 💪
During the Assembly, the students get to ask a question to the guest celebrities.
Bec admitted being very nervous for the first interview, while she appeared to be taking notes, but was actually colouring in to calm her nerves! ✏ However, she felt more confident after the first interview and could really be in the moment for the ones following. “I learned not to make a fuss for famous people” she said. She was very open about her autism and ADHD, she felt there was understanding for it as it was a big aspect of the tv series.
When asked about her experience, she said: “the crew was amazing and the celebs 10/10!” Everyone was very accommodating to her and her husband. She appreciated how much the producers were willing to adapt. “People with autism, sometimes need a bit more guidance and I felt very heard while working with the crew.” 👏
Seeing herself on television felt a bit weird for Bec. “I care about my personal appearance so sometimes I would nitpick on small details like my lipstick not being quite right but also realising, most people don’t notice these things!” But she believes it’s important to have representation of all shapes and sizes on television! 🌈
Reflecting on her time with The Assembly, she told us she learned about journalism but also about herself. “I learned what sort of questions are appropriate for different environments and I learned about myself and gained a lot of confidence which I can now apply to my work”. She also found herself more willing to try new things now! 🙌
A highlight for Bec was making new friends and getting to know other women on the spectrum! And learning how to be a better friend! 🫶
Finally, Bec wanted to share a message with My Supports:
“A big thank you to My Supports and my clients who have supported her to participate in this opportunity!” She felt very supported by My Supports to participate in this opportunity and felt that in other jobs she might not have been given the flexibility to do so. My Supports understood this was an opportunity for her to grow and she didn’t have to worry about her job while she was away! 💛
