Today, an enthusiastic group of residents gathered to plait the challot for tonight’s dinner. As our hands worked the soft, stretchy dough, we sang along to Israeli music, talking and laughing together, immersing ourselves in a tradition our ancestors have practised for thousands of years.
Once the mini challot were shaped and plaited, we took them outside to rise in the warmth of the sun. Later, we brought the trays back inside, brushed each loaf with egg, sprinkled them with a pinch of salt, and said a prayer before placing them in the oven.
Soon, the familiar and beautiful aroma of challah baking filled the home. Curious residents and visitors followed the scent, drawn in by the warmth & delicious aroma and stayed for the laughter, conversation and the comforting sense that we are all family.
Tray after tray emerged from the oven, each one carrying the promise of nourishment, not only physical, but spiritual as well. And would you believe it? As an MZH community, we managed to bake enough mini challot for each resident to receive their own at Shabbat dinner tonight.
From our tables to yours, Shabbat Shalom.
