Whooping cough has hit record numbers in Perth and can be quite scary for parents to hear for the first time. Here’s what to look for and when you need to seek medical help.

🤧 Pertussis or ‘Whooping Cough’ usually starts with regular cold or flu like symptoms and then progresses to a cough that almost sounds like a ‘whoop’ noise when breathing in (sound on to hear an example 🔊)
If your child has any or all of these symptoms; cough that sounds like a ‘whoop’, lethargy, is vomiting after coughing, decreased appetite and water intake or fever we can help.

‼️If your child is under 3 months, has severe respiratory distress, blue lips or is increasingly unwell very quickly-please call 000 or go straight to your nearest emergency department.

⭐️The best prevention for whooping cough is vaccinations.

Drop a 🐓 if you went to a chicken pox party back in the day!
(please do not host a party if you have chicken pox now!) Chicken Pox is currently on high rotation at Kinkaya!

Here’s a few symptoms to look for:
Chickenpox typically presents with low-grade fever, malaise, rash that progresses blistered to crusted lesions over about 5 days

General measures include:
Tepid bathing or cool compresses which may help to alleviate itching.
Pain relief such as Panadol and Nurofen.

Stay home from school or work until all blisters have dried or at least for 5 days after eruption first appears to avoid contact with high-risk susceptible persons.

The team at Kinkaya kids and family urgent care are just born with an extra ‘amazing’ gene and we’re so grateful for every single one of them!
