On World AIDS Day today, 1 December, we’re reminded that HIV does not discriminate - people do. Stigma remains one of the greatest barriers for those living with HIV, often compounding complex health and social needs.

Around the world, HIV research has been disrupted. Yet Silverchain’s HIV nursing team in South Australia continues to provide the best care to every person, every time. Our four nurses work every day to break down stigma, keep clients connected to treatment, and ensure that no one is left behind.

This year’s theme, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” reflects their commitment: ensuring that stigma never stands in the way of health, dignity, and connection.

This Remembrance Day, we honour the extraordinary service of individuals like Dora Nichterlein, whose legacy continues to inspire.

Born in 1918, Dora began her nursing career in 1937 and went on to serve in the Australian Army Nursing Service during World War II. Her postings included the 101st Australian General Hospital in Northfield, South Australia, and Katherine in the Northern Territory. She later joined the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan, where she cared for Australian and Commonwealth troops in the post-war years.

After her military service, Dora’s commitment to care never wavered. She became Director of Nursing at the Royal District Nursing Society (now known as RDNS Silverchain), where she championed advancements in home health care and nursing education, leaving a lasting impact on generations of nurses and clients alike.

Her life is a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of service through war, peace, and community care.

Today, we pause to honour all who have served, past and present, and those who continue to carry the legacy of service in their lives.

At Silverchain, we are privileged to support many veterans and their families. Every day, we witness their strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication to others.

We will remember them.

More than 60% of older Australians receiving home care experience depression or anxiety, yet too often it goes unrecognised.

Silverchain’s EMBED program is changing that. After strong results in Victoria, we’re now expanding this world-first trial to WA and SA, giving more older people access to screening, support and treatment at home.

This World Mental Health Day, we’re proud to be supporting older Australians mental health and wellbeing to live well and independently in their own home.

It introduces eight new funding levels, three distinct support pathways, and a quarterly budget to enhance your care experience at home.

In recognition of Pride Month at Silverchain, we are encouraging our communities to reflect on the importance of being a good ally to the LGBTQ+ community. 🏳️‍🌈

In doing this, we recognise that allyship is an important part of how Silverchain can support people still experiencing discrimination. Being an ally is a choice. It is about choosing to be visible and vocal for the rights of others, calling out bias and unacceptable behaviour, and using our voice to effect change.

Each one of us has the power to contribute to a more inclusive world of true equality and dignity for all.

As the third largest Home Care Package provider in Australia, Silverchain welcomes the Federal Government’s decision to delay the implementation of the new Aged Care Act and the Support at Home program until 1 November 2025.

Reforms of this magnitude should not be rushed at the expense of those most impacted - older Australians. The decision to delay these reforms allows more time for the Government to finalise the detail that consumers and the sector are waiting on.

It's important to get these once-in-a-generation reforms right for older people, their carers and families, and the dedicated aged care workers who deliver high quality care.
