❗💸 Police are warning retailers and food vendors to be on the lookout for fake cash being used in transactions following a recent rise in reports of counterfeit money in circulation.

💸🍔Fast food/takeaway stores and smaller retail outlets such as service stations are predominantly being targeted, with offenders making small purchases and paying with a fake $50 or $100 note, then receiving legitimate change.

➡️👮Our message to the public, and to retail staff in particular, is to be aware this practice is frequent and if people are using $50 or $100 notes to make small purchases, then you should scrutinise the money to ensure it is legal.

➡️At first glance the notes may appear legitimate. But in many cases, these fake notes are not sophisticated, having been printed on standard paper, with poor colouring and not cut straight.

➡️When handling cash, people are asked to always check:
📌 Both sides of the note. Some counterfeit notes have the word “PROPS” printed on them
📌 That the security window feature is legitimate
📌 For inconsistencies in thickness and colour.

📞👀If you detect a counterfeit note, don’t accept it and contact police on 131 444 and provide any relevant information, including CCTV footage if possible.

📞👀Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers Tasmania on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au

📢 PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT – CHRISTMAS PARADE ROAD CLOSURES & PARKING RESTRICTIONS

Motorists and shoppers are advised that significant road closures and parking restrictions will be in place for the Christmas Parade on Saturday, 6 December. Please expect delays and allow additional time when travelling in or around the CBD.

To help reduce congestion and maintain safety, we encourage residents to avoid using vehicles in the town area before, during, and immediately after the parade where possible. Consider using parking areas that are not directly affected by the parade route.

The parade draws large crowds, including many families and children, and the CBD will be far busier than a normal Saturday. If you experience delays, please stay patient, take a moment to breathe, and remember that your calm and careful driving helps keep our community safe.

🚧 Road Closures (6am – 1:30pm)

Charles Street - from York St to Patterson St

St John Street - from Cimitiere St to Patterson St

Frederick Street - between St John St and Charles St (Allocated as a temporary bus stop for Metro Tasmania)

Lower Charles Street - (outside Harvey Norman) Allocated as a temporary bus stop for Kinetic and Calows services due to the temporary closure of the St John Street Transit Centre.

We thank you for your cooperation and patience as we work to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christmas Parade for everyone.
