We're welcoming a new face at our Bunbury Office. 🐶

Helen the Guide Dog has recently partnered with our talented Assistive Technology Mentor, Nicki Muir, and will be joining her at our VisAbility branch in Lotteries House!

Nicki has been working as an Assistive Technology (AT) Mentor for over four years, helping our clients find the right tools for their unique needs. Those tools vary from person to person - they can be incredibly simple, like a white cane or a glass magnifier, or increasingly complex, like computer software or AI-powered smart glasses. Assistive technology is never a one-size-fits-all situation, and many factors beyond simple function need to be considered.

While Nicki has been working with VisAbility for quite a while, her journey with us stretches much further. Since her early childhood, Nicki has been a VisAbility client. At the age of 12, she started using a white cane, which has been a core part of her Assistive Technology arsenal ever since.

But over the years, Nicki began to recognise that, for her, a white cane wasn’t a perfect fit. Eventually, this realisation brought Nicki to Guide Dogs WA, which is where Helen comes in. After an extensive matching process, Nicki and Helen are now ready to set off on the next step of their new adventure – together.

If you or someone you know could benefit from an Assistive Technology Mentor appointment, Nicki (and Helen!) has times available at our Bunbury Office. For all enquiries, please contact our Client Experience Team on 9311 8202 or send an email to CETenquiries@visability.com.au.

As we wrap up Low Vision Awareness Month, we asked our staff to share their personal insights, the purpose behind everyday features they’d never questioned before....

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed the purpose of the bumps (tactile markers) on footpaths at road crossings.”

Those raised dots aren’t decorative - they’re information you can feel. They help people identify key points like crossing locations and changes in the environment.

Our Orientation & Mobility specialists teach people how to use cues like these to travel safely and confidently, using practical strategies tailored to the person and the places they move through every day.

Did you know that our Resource Centre sells the revolutionary Meta Glasses? Here's our Tasmanian Assistive Tech expert, Jordan, modelling them. 😎

If you’re interested in using wearable technology to support everyday independence, our team is here to help.

This game-changing piece of technology can assist with reading signs, recognising faces, taking hands‑free photos, and getting spoken information when you need it. They’re a great option for people living with vision impairment who want simple, quick access to information.

Our Orientation & Mobility specialists can also show you how to use the glasses safely and confidently in your daily routines - at home, at work, or when travelling.

Ready to purchase your very own pair? Head to the online VisAbility shop: https://livingaids.com.au/
Or you can visit the shop in person from Monday to Thursday between 9 - 3:30pm.

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re paying closer attention to the environment around us.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the everyday obstacles they didn’t notice until working at VisAbility.

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed how many people park blocking the footpath in residential areas, and how challenging this can make it for people with low or no vision.”

A car across a footpath might feel minor, but it can force someone into the road or into unexpected hazards. Keeping pathways clear helps everyone travel safely.

If you want one simple way to make your street safer:
• Keep footpaths clear
• Leave room at curb ramps and crossings
• Remember the footpath is someone’s route and not a spare parking bay

Small choices. Big safety impact.

We’re looking for a Grounds Maintenance Assistant Volunteer – just like Trevor! 👨‍🌾

For nearly five years, Trevor has been a much‑loved part of our volunteer team, helping keep our gardens tidy, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone who visits VisAbility in Victoria Park WA

He first joined after being introduced to the role by his support worker. After losing his job, volunteering gave Trevor a renewed sense of purpose and fulfilment. He takes great pride in spending time outdoors, helping to keep our gardens tidy and welcoming for the people who use our services.

Trevor particularly enjoys gardening and finds it incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact of his work. He values being around others and looks forward to coming in each week, especially when he gets to see puppies socialising in the garden, which is always a highlight!

Now, we’re hoping to welcome another Grounds Maintenance Assistant Volunteer to join our team.

If you enjoy gardening, like being active outdoors, or simply want to make a meaningful difference in a friendly and supportive environment, we’d love to hear from you.

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re highlighting how information is presented.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights and the barriers they didn’t see until they started working at VisAbility.

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed that so much of the world assumes everyone can access information visually.”

Tiny text. PDFs that won’t read properly on screen readers. Important details shown only in charts, colours, or images.

Access should never be an afterthought, especially when it's information people need to live, learn, work, and connect.

Did you know that our Accessible Information Services team helps convert content into formats that people can actually use, including accessible documents and alternative formats?

You’re also welcome to play our lovely baby grand piano!

If you’d like to get involved, call Amy on 0434 356 130 (Mon-Thurs), or email cacactivities@visability.com.au

It’s Low Vision Awareness Month, and this February, we’re highlighting the way we communicate.

We asked our staff to share their personal insights, the habits they didn’t realise they had until they worked closely with people with low or no vision...

“Before working at VisAbility, I never noticed how often people point, or say ‘over there,’ instead of giving clear verbal directions.”

It’s so automatic, until you realise how many people it leaves out.

A small swap makes a big difference:
• “Two steps to your left”
• “It’s on the table in front of you, near the edge”
• “The doorway is at 2 o’clock”

What’s something you never noticed before learning about low vision?
