Today we celebrated International Day of People with Disability across NMHS, sharing stories from our people, patients and community, holding information stalls and gathering for a special event to increase our knowledge of how to better support the disabled community in our everyday practice.

Disability advocate Eric Seery (accompanied by his guide dog Nora) shared his journey about losing his sight from a young age when diagnosed with Stargardt disease. Eric provided valuable insight and tips for health care professionals to support people with disability.

The session included a powerful Deaf Awareness Training workshop, which included best practice communication strategies for clinicians to support individuals who identify as hard of hearing and deaf.

A special thank you to those who provided the opportunities to strengthen our connections with the disabled community so that we can continue exploring ways to increasing inclusivity for our disabled community.

As a health service provider, we are committed to ensuring that people with disability have equitable access to health services, information and employment opportunities.

A Hospital in the Home (HITH) Centre opened at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital this week to enable more patients to receive care in the comfort of their home πŸ‘

The HITH Centre allows for rapid multidisciplinary assessment and follow up of patients referred to, admitted or discharged from our HITH program.

Under the program, patients are visited at home each day by a multidisciplinary team of health professionals and can be seen by nurses up to twice daily if required.

The opening of the centre reflects a growing shift in healthcare away from the hospital setting to providing safe, personalised treatment by clinicians in the home environment.

Since January 2025, our HITH program has provided nearly 650 episodes of care and the program has received a 100 per cent satisfaction result from their patients.

We have further plans to grow this important service.

We were proud to once again have stands at PrideFEST Fairday.
Our people were on hand to provide information about our services and commitment to providing an inclusive workforce, where people of all gender and sexualities feel respected and appreciated.
Our Screening Saves Lives team also attended to promote the importance of breast, bowel, lung and cervical screening.
For the first time, a BreastScreen WA mobile clinic offered free mammograms for eligible community members with no symptoms at the event, and it was booked out!
We are committed to welcoming and making trans and gender-diverse people feel safe while receiving vital healthcare screening.
BreastScreen WA Director Adj A/Prof Emmeline Lee said screening is vital to leading a long and healthy life.
β€œWe know the LGBTIQA+ community is under-screened, and we want to change that. We want to break down barriers by offering an inclusive and safe environment for eligible participants,” she said.

Orange is a powerful colour of optimism and hope, chosen by the United Nations to end Violence against Women campaign.

We know that health services are often the first point of contact for victim-survivors, and it is important our teams know how to respond and support them.

This is why we announced our new Action Plan for our inaugural Family Domestic Violence (FDV) Framework at our 16 Days in WA Symposium yesterday, which identifies risk and outlines safe pathways to support patients and our people.

A special thank you to the Hon Minister for Health Meredith Hammat MLA for officially launching the Action Plan at our event.

Other topics covered at the symposium included our inaugural FDV policy, latest research, service models and pilots, including trauma-informed care being provided in partnership with priority population groups.

As an organisation, we place priority on working with others on this important topic, including speaking out against violence and accessing resources and training available.

Together we can work towards a future free from violence and a brighter world for women and girls everywhere.

You may have noticed that King Edward Memorial Hospital has been lit purple this week, as part of our activities for National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers and the event serves as a timely reminder that regular screening reduces the risk.

Our WA Cervical Cancer Prevention team encourages women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 years to have a screening test every five years.

A Cervical Screening Test checks for human papillomavirus (HPV) - a common infection that can lead to abnormal cell changes and is the cause most cervical cancers.

There are now two options for having a cervical screening test. Your doctor can do the test for you, or you can choose to do the test yourself with a self-swab. Both choices are safe, accurate and effective.

Escape room designer Sam was diagnosed with bowel cancer in his early 30s. Thankfully the disease was caught early, and he is now encouraging others to get tested if showing any signs.

Young people in Australia are now more at risk of developing bowel cancer than their parents, with Australia having the highest rates of early-onset colorectal cancer diagnosis globally.

"People that are showing any signs should not to be scared of going to their GP,” Sam said.

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Consultant Gastroenterologist Dr Nabil Saddique said bowel cancer has become the deadliest cancer for Australians aged 24 to 44 years.

People born in the 90s are now three times more likely to get bowel cancer than their parents.

"It is due to a complex interplay of dietary factors, like excess red meat, low fibre and processed foods, but also lifestyle factors, such as obesity, smoking and alcohol," Dr Saddique said.
