Long-serving Graylands Hospital volunteer Edna Prosser recently celebrated her 100th birthday, with a morning tea ceremony held in her honour. 🎂

Edna has been volunteering with us for an amazing 48 years, for which we are extremely grateful.

Edna's volunteering journey began in the 1970s, when she began helping with the local sewing group. Over the years she has supported a variety of projects, including arranging fundraising, taking patients on outings, helping set up the shop inside Frankland, developing the volunteer centre and establishing the Volunteer's Op Shop. She was also the President of Graylands Hospital Volunteers Service Inc for more than 35 years and is still a committee member.

She continues to volunteer every Wednesday, and is truly an inspiration to the team.

Wishing Edna a very happy birthday, as she joins the exclusive centenarian's club 🥳

The amazing expertise of our Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital team has led to a patient going from being critically unwell and completely deaf following a severe middle ear infection to now being able to hear in both ears with the help of cochlear implants.

After developing meningitis and encephalitis (swelling in the brain) from a middle ear infection that led to Shellie being admitted into our intensive care unit, she was unable to hear out of both ears and could only communicate via a tablet.

The clinical team recommended cochlear implants were inserted into both ears as soon as possible. Despite the chance of success being minimal due to inflammation and scarring they remained hopeful.

To everyone's delight Shellie could hear normal words and speech immediately when the implants were switched on a few weeks later.

Head of Audiology, Adj A/Professor Dayse Tavora-Vieira said no one had dry eyes, and this was an extremely emotional moment for all, especially Shellie.

Shellie said she still has a long road ahead but is so grateful to the Charlies’ staff who saved her life, and says it’s incredible to hear her granddaughters cry, laugh and speak their first words.

Well done team! 👏

Congratulations to Dr Wen Yeow, Interventional Cardiologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, who has been recognised as one of the only three proctors worldwide in the field of minimal access tricuspid valve replacement.

This procedure is performed on one of the four valves that control blood flow through the heart to manage tricuspid valve regurgitation, which can cause blood to flow the wrong way when the valve fails to close properly,

Dr Yeow's recognition as one of the only three global proctors in the field exemplifies his commitment to innovation for structural heart disease and improving treatment options for patients with tricuspid valve regurgitation.

Congratulations to Dr Yeow and the Cardiovascular Medicine Department on this fantastic achievement.

A student excursion was recently held at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, where Aboriginal Health Practitioner students could gain a clear insight into the clinical service environment.

Fifteen students from the Marr Mooditj Training Aboriginal Health Practitioner course attended with their educators to gain first-hand knowledge on what it is like to work in a hospital, learning specifically about the complex area of renal.

Our partnership with Marr Mooditj aims to provide clinical opportunities aligned to students planning to become Aboriginal health practitioners.

The event also provided the opportunity for students to build connections and collaborate, as well enabling our renal team to inform and educate.

We have been busy crunching numbers and found some interesting facts on babies born in 2025 at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Osborne Park Hospital and our Family Birth Centre as well home births supported by our services.

The average age of first-time mums has dropped from 31.5 years to 30 years over the past 12 months. There were less twins born but the exact same number of triplets born over the same period.

👶 7,254 babies were born
👶 17 March was our busiest day for births, with 34 babies born
👶 159 sets of twins and six sets of triplets were born
👶 30 years was the average age of a first-time mum
👶 360g was the smallest weight of a baby

A special shout out to all those that supported our patients, visitors and the broader community over the past 12 months.

The survivor of an aggressive skin cancer recently returned to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital to thank the nurses, radiographers and specialist physicians for the care he provided.

Paul said all the staff are superheroes and he can’t thank them enough, stating he wouldn't be here if it wasn't for their care and a clinical trial.

"I am super grateful for the kind and caring team who supported me through a very difficult time. They are just amazing," he said.

Paul is also keen to warn others about the dangers of being complacent in the harsh Australian sun.

“It takes just five minutes to apply a 50-plus sunscreen and a few dollars for a wide brim hat, so please cover up so you don’t end up like me,“ he said.
