In 2014, four close friends with over 30+ years of friendship, were going about the usual ‘day to day’ craziness – the juggle of life … balancing work, kids, good food, exercise, yoga, husbands, plus enjoying a bit of a party/dance/boogie in there as well… the balance seemed right! Life was fast, but fun and healthy!!
Nat was listening to a Dietitian on the radio regarding turmeric and tackling Alzheimer’s…. and so the journey began. A very close friend’s mum was suffering from the disease, so Nat started a concoction of turmeric powder, black pepper honey and milk, and we were told we all HAD to have it every day! The taste was certainly not ideal, but hey, it was healthy right??
Early 2015, Dan was diagnosed with a rare genetic default, that resulted in multiple head and neck tumors – unfortunately as a result of operations and treatment she was left with a poor swallow and no voice – this meant swallowing ‘gritty’ turmeric powder was near impossible… so began the fresh turmeric paste production… sourced from a local fruit and veg shop, we began grating fresh turmeric and seeping it into milk for a nightly latte… over time we refined processes, improved blending, added ingredients to improve taste and texture and researched multiple journals…. The result, out fresh turmeric paste – just add liquid!!
Then came the day that our turmeric arrived from Qld… looked amazing and fresh, smelt amazing, but tasted so bitter – totally different to the turmeric we sourced previously. Disappointed, we called our supplier who suggested we try making Jamu – we knew of Jamu from trips to Bali, but had no idea what it really was –he gave us a base recipe, we googled, we researched, we chatted with dietitians, taste tested different versions on our friends and families, took on feedback - the final result, our Wellness Tonic!!
