Some parents are now deep in that exciting yet often nerve-wracking time when their children make the shift to full-time school. It’s crucial to remember that this transition can be overwhelming—especially when we consider how the current education system often isn't built with children's emotional and developmental needs at the forefront.

The traditional school environment, with its emphasis on rigid schedules, standardised learning, and increasing pressures, can be a significant contrast to the more fluid and nurturing environment many children experience at home or in early education settings. For many, this can feel like a big leap that requires more than just physical preparation.

💖 Gentle Parenting's Role in This Transition: 💖

Validate Their Feelings: Kids may feel excited, nervous, or even scared about starting school. Instead of brushing off their emotions or telling them they’ll be fine, let them know it’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions. Create a safe space for them to express what they’re feeling and offer comfort and reassurance.

Stay Connected: Although full-time school can pull your child away from home more often, connection remains key. Encourage open lines of communication, like, “What was the best part of your day?” to help them process and share their experiences.

Adjust Expectations: The education system often expects children to adapt quickly to a formal, structured routine, but not all children are ready for that kind of transition. Remember that it’s okay if your child doesn’t immediately thrive in this new environment. Each child develops at their own pace and that's okay.

Create a Sense of Security: Small rituals can go a long way in making children feel safe. Whether it’s a special goodbye hug, a favourite item in their backpack, or a calming bedtime routine, these consistent practices help remind them that home is always a safe, supportive place to return to.

🌟 Reimagining the System: 🌟

It's important to recognise that the education system, as it stands, is not necessarily built to cater to the individuality of every child. The current structure can place undue stress on children, especially as they transition into a more formalized and standardized approach to learning.

While some children may thrive in this setting, others may struggle to keep up with timelines, assessments, and expectations that do not take their unique needs, learning styles, or emotional well-being into account. As parents and caregivers, it’s vital to advocate for a more holistic approach to education—one that prioritises mental health, creativity, and emotional development just as much as academic achievement. One parent advocating for one child, will not change the system as a whole. Yet many parents advocating for many children- that just might!

📚 Supporting Change, One Child at a Time: 📚

As we guide our children through this transition, let’s keep in mind that we can help them build resilience, adaptability, and a sense of empowerment in the face of an educational system that often doesn’t work for all kids. Encourage your child’s strengths, and support their learning journey with patience and love.

Remember, the most important thing is that they know they are seen, valued, and loved—no matter what school looks like. ❤️

Here at Little Earth Wellness, my approach is to guide you to make the changes you feel may be best for you. How do I do this?

Through a strengths based, solution focused, client centred approach.

Why do I work from a strengths based perspective?
Because often we can forget that we may already have the answers, the skills and the ability to work through an issue. This means we focus on what strengths, skills and attributes you as an individual already have, and use them to find the best solutions to help you move forward.

Why am I solutions focused?
Some clients require specialised, intensive therapy over a long period of time. Others don't. My therapeutic work is structured over 6 sessions. If I cannot assist you in that time, or your situation is more complex, I will refer you onto the right supports. Often clients will return to me for 'check ins' and that's wonderful also. Having some guidance and support to keep you on the right path is also great!

Why am I client centred?
Because therapy is not a one size fits all. What works for one person, won't always work for the next. Taking an individualised approach means my clients feel seen and heard.

My family stand with the family, friends and community of Cassius Turvey. May you rest in the Dreaming while we rise in action.

Cassius was brutally attacked with his mates after school by adult men. They literally had to run for their lives. Only boys. Only babies.

This was not a case of wrong time, wrong place. This was a modern-day lynching.

I am usually the type of person who would softly and gently attempt to educate the racist bigots I come across, believing their opinions to be a result of mere ignorance, of white privilege, a lack of a well-rounded education, but I won't any longer.

If the sight of Cassius' mother crying doesn't bring you to your knees, doesn't break your heart, doesn't enrage the mama or papa bear in you - then you are not worth my soft approach. I'll call you out. Not just because next time, it could be my husband, my baby, my family. But because I won't pretend we are a modern, equitable nation, working towards reconciliation, when our most vulnerable minority are still being killed and our Police Commissioner tries to play off the murder of a child as a sad mistake of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Please join the community for a Candlelight Vigil today at 5.30pm on the Midland Oval and this coming Wednesday 2nd Nov, 12.30pm at Forrest Place, Perth.

A simple calming exercise for those feeling anxious, overwhelmed or dysregulated. Press each finger to the thumb while reciting this mantra. The combination of thinking or reciting the words while consciously performing the action will help to refocus the brain while the affirmation also works to retrain the nervous system into coming back to a state of calm.

Great for when you need to regulate yourself before holding space for a dysregulated child, or even as a transitional action to shift through different parts of your day. Also, an awesome discreet yet empowering tool you can give kids who may be feeling nervous or upset in social settings.

Affirmations and mantras are perfect for those seeking to change negative core beliefs or self-sabotaging thought patterns, build stronger self-esteem and also improve mental health and wellbeing.

A little snippet taken from a conversation we had in group recently. It's interesting to note that the answer given here was very direct and truthful.

We can't expect a child to self-regulate until they are given the tools and knowledge to do so. However in some cases children are chided for 'throwing a tantrum' with no direction other than to calm down, be quiet or something similar. Even when a child is taught a better (sometimes also safer) way to handle feelings of overwhelm or upset, they may still revert back to huge displays of emotions. And that's okay. It takes a long time to create new patterns and have confidence in new ways of expressing oneself, and even adults struggle with regulation at times.

Let's show our littles some grace and give them the tools they need to share their feelings and emotions as well as manage them safely.

In the chaos of our busy lives, we often forget that we are our children's first role models. It's not until they reach their early teens that we drop away as their primary influence and their peer circle steps into that place.

So use this time wisely and while you can - to build connection, stability, and a strong sense of self. If you want your child to read, read with them and in front of them. If you want them to be healthy, show them what a healthy lifestyle looks like.

We all want our children to live well, and as parents we work hard to give them the things we perhaps didn't have ready access to. But there is nothing more infuriating and frustrating to a young person when an adult makes a request of them that they can't or won't uphold themselves.

Getting into better alignment with your child prior to their teen years is something you can do now and everyday moving forward.

Help normalise and navigate mistake-making using three simple questions.

"What did you do wrong?"

This focuses on the behaviour. It also allows the child to take responsibility for their role in the issue. If you receive, "I don't know", or the child redirects the blame to somebody else, taking a break and discussing again later can help. This gives the child time to wrestle through their own feelings, and come to a place of ownership.

"Why was that wrong?"

This drops your child into their heart space where their conscience is called upon to assess the situation and their role within it. This then leads into a much deeper understanding on what behaviour can be worked on. For example, if a child was being mean, then they need to work on being kinder.

"What can you do different next time?"

This allows them a way forward, empowers them in their decision-making skills and gives them strategies to deal with particularly difficult situations.

Remember this strategy can take awhile. But have faith that you are consistently leading the child away from negative choices and responding the right way. It's important to reassure your child that it's through making these mistakes that they learn. Always end with positive affirmations.

"You got this. I believe in you. You have a kind heart. Good work."

Remember during this most hectic time of year, find your calm. If you have only 10 minutes to yourself, use it to center yourself and recharge. Feel all you need to, acknowledge it and let it go. Be like the sky, ever changing but always present.

I'm feeling very lucky to have such beautiful clients today, and was gifted with gorgeous flowers which are brightening my space as I type up my client notes.

Hope you are easing yourself gently into the festive season with plenty of time to enjoy every moment.
